A savings-and-loan bank is robbed; later, a police wiretap identifies teller Leon Poole as inside man. In capturing him, detective Sam Wagner accidentally kills Poole's young wife, and at his trial Poole swears vengeance against Wagner. About three years later, Poole (until then a model prisoner) abruptly takes his chance to kill a guard and escape. It's clear during the ensuing manhunt that Poole is obsessed in pursuit of a single end; but not quite the end everyone supposes.

This episode begins in a midtown office building after hours. A well-dressed man on the street (James Dukas) pounds at the glass door to the marble lobby - demanding entry. He shows his doctor bag and shouts that he is answering an emergency call. The watchman, unbolting the door and operating the passenger elevator for him, protests that the building is absolutely empty, no one is there who could have called him, there must be a mistake. As the watchman rises in the cab, he glances at the glowering face of "the doctor" and appears to realize that it was he, and not the stranger, who just made the mistake. Once the stranger has murdered him, he brings the elevator back to the lobby and opens the door for his accomplices, a young man (John Dutra) dressed in the same kind of service uniform as the watchman, and an older man (Leonardo Cimino). The narrator intones that there are patient men and that there are impatient men.

The troubled man is riding his horse on the beach when he comes across Peggy, a strikingly beautiful dark-haired woman (Joan Bennett) who is gathering firewood near the remains of a shipwreck. He finds himself strangely drawn to her. When she invites him to dinner with her husband Tod (Charles Bickford), a once-great painter who has gone blind. Scott accepts.

Ryan becomes obsessed with Peggy and grows to hate Tod, convinced that the artist is faking is blindness in order to keep his unhappy wife from leaving him. To test his theory, Scott takes Tod for a walk, then leads him close to the edge of a cliff above the ocean and . . .

Torn by the fear that he might get caught by a legal system he belittles, he goes deeper into insanity and crime.

Simon Cordier is a well-respected magistrate who visits a condemned prisoner, Louis Girot, just before the man's execution. Girot again pleads his innocence insisting that he has been taken over by a spirit that forced him to commit his crimes. Cordier doesn't believe him and the man suddenly dies. Cordier does however note a rapid change in his personality during their short interview. In the following days, Cordier must face a number of strange occurrences in his home. He begins to wonder if he is sleepwalking but is soon hearing voices and begins to wonder about his sanity. It's recommended to him that he take up sculpting, something he once had an interest in. He develops a relationship with Odette, a gold digger married to a struggling artist, but the evil, invisible spirit soon drives him to murder.
