What they don't know is that the boxer's 10 bout winning streak is the result of fixed matches and an unscrupulous boxing promoter now wants him to take in dive in the championship bout. Sam comes up with a clever solution that he hopes will satisfy all parties.

Tim Fox makes a home-run, and Sam leaps into Dr. Gerald Bryant as a college professor in the middle of a class.

As Tom Stratton, an Air Force test pilot about to attempt a dangerous flight. Sam finds his memory Swiss cheesed, with only enough left to know that he is not where or when he belongs. According to Sam's friend and partner Al, who appears to him as a hologram nobody else can see, Al explains that the Project has gone awry and in order to leap out of the pilot's body, Sam must successfully fly the X-2 to Mach 3, which according to historical records, ended in a fatal crash.

Twenty years later Rankin is released from prison, changes his name to "Duke Sheldon", and eventually becomes a nightclub owner with ties to the mob. Helen has remarried - to a local judge - and daughter Sandra has become a reporter. When it's learned that notoriously camera-shy "Duke Sheldon" will be providing a mobster's alibi at a high-profile trial Sandra is sent to write an exposé. She immediately recognizes Rankin from a photo her mother kept, and father and daughter have a tearful reunion.

After Ben Lander has told Gina that Morpeth and a man named Cockburn visited the night before his uncle and Mark were killed Venn drops Frank, wounded in the shoot-out, off at hospital. Gina gets a call from Joe Collins, whom she and meet in hiding. He says that Styles paid him and Stevie to kill her but instead they decamped with his lap-top, which he gives Venn. Gina confronts Sir Nigel, an open supporter of Wentworth, over her parents' death but, after he has said they would not oblige with Cockburn's request, he is killed. Venn hacks into the lap-top and discovers that Mark is alive and set to kill Wentworth next day at his press conference. Gate-crashing the event Venn sees Mark with a gun though the victim is not the intended one and ultimately nothing is resolved.

Despite the warning phone call telling him to get out the insurance company claim the explosion was caused by a gas leak. Venn gets his investigator Frank Hanna to break into Gina's doctor's office and find out more about her from her files but heavies led by Jason Styles, who knew Venn's brother, chase him away. Venn seeks out barrister Sir Nigel Fountain, who says that Gina is his daughter and an espouser of lost causes. Whilst Stevie is murdered in prison Venn and his ex-wife Lauren learn their teenage son Michael has been arrested for drug-dealing. Eventually Venn tracks Gina down in Paris, where she has stumbled upon the corpse of newly released prisoner Tannzir,who was convicted of the random murder of Jennifer Moscati. Venn and Gina are threatened by Hillman, who is shot dead by a mysterious saviour.

After killing Hillman the mysterious saviour disappears but Venn finds a picture of Jason Styles in Tannzir's possession. Gina explains that Sir Nigel is her adoptive father and her real parents were killed twenty years earlier. Her mother,Jennifer Moscati,was murdered by Tannzir on the orders of Styles, who, she believes, also killed her father as well as being the real killer of Venn's brother. At a dinner given by Wentworth's sponsors Styles also shows up. Venn and Gina return to London where James Morpeth, one of Wentworth's supporters, sends Styles to kill Gina but she recognises him and escapes, believing that Sir Nigel is also in on the plot. She meets Venn and Frank Hanna and they go to the house in Kent where, twenty years earlier, the killing of Venn's brother took place, to meet the only survivor of that night, wheelchair-bound Ben Lander. He points a gun at Venn who is saved by Hanna.

Venn is reluctant,especially since Gina and her firm do not appear to exist on paper but is intrigued when Quirke claims to have news of Venn's brother Mark, apparently killed in a police shoot-out years earlier. Leaving the prison, Venn is surprised to see Paul Hillman, a policeman whom he also thought was dead. Next day he survives a bomb blast at his office. Meanwhile Opposition Leader Alexander Wentworth goes on television to attack PM Brian Worsley, whose supposed corruption and bribery have caused nation-wide riots.

A mutilated corpse is found in the disused ice house in the grounds of Streech Grange. The ten year old investigation of the murder of David Maybury is reopened. Phoebe Maybury has rebuilt her life following her husband's disapearance and she lives with her two friends Anne Cattrell and Diana Goode which leads the villagers to believe that they are lesbians. Detective Inspector Walsh is convinced that the body is Maybury and that Phoebe is the culprit. His Sergeant McCloughlin follows another line of enquiry and he finds a knife hidden in Anne Cattrell's living quarters and arrests her on suspicion of the murder. The blood on the knife turns out not to be human so she is released. McCloughlin is becoming infatuated with Anne. They go out for the evening on the way back she is attacked and McCloughlin saves her life. He bumps into Phoebe's daughter and learns something about David Maybury. Walsh still maintains that the body is Maybury but McCloughlin thinks it could be another missing person.

The peaceful, secluded, country hideaway of three diverse, lonely, supposedly lesbian, women is suddenly shattered when their gardener discovers a partially decomposed corpse in the old Ice House on their grounds. The ensuing police investigation has the unfortunate repercussion of re-igniting the anger and hatred of the local community levelled against the women which started ten years previously when the husband of one of them mysteriously disappeared without trace. The same senior police officer from ten years ago is assigned the case and is determined to bring the women to justice this time around. The case is further complicated when his deputy, whose marriage is on the rocks, starts to take more than a professional interest in one of the women.

A deal is struck and Jenkins agrees to help Pentecost on his next job. Jenkins is unaware of his partner's past and so is unprepared for where the job takes them.
