Fedora (1978)

Fedora, an aging and reclusive film star, dies in Paris, struck by a train. At her funeral, a film producer thinks back over the past two weeks and the part he might have played in her death. He'd gone to Corfu to track her down, pushing himself into her island villa, where she lived with a nurse, an old countess, and the plastic surgeon who's success at keeping her looking young is amazing. We see her mental stability fail as the producer offers her a script for "Anna Karenina;" soon she's locked away in a Parisian asylum and the producer is in the hospital with a concussion. His reverie ended, the countess takes up the narration and completes Fedora's story.

This George Morris story was based on an article that appeared in "Woman's Home Companion" and later reprinted in "Reader's Digest." Eddie Condon, a two-bit racketeer, teams up with an alcoholic doctor, Judson, to set up a maternity home with free facilities to expectant mothers, with the proviso that the women sign away all rights to their newborns. The babies are then offered for adaptation to couples willing to make a substantial "contribution" to the home. Things go well for this borderline within-the-law business until a baby is still-born. Conden had already sold the baby for $5,000 and has no intention of returning the money, so he substitutes the child of the sister of his wife. There is a slip-up on the filing of the certificates and the District Attorney's office gets involved.

Stephanie Beacham is a famous actress back in the UK after years spent in the U.S. She has received death threats over her outspoken political views. Special Branch is called in because she is the daughter of a cabinet minister.

George Sewell, Patrick Mower and Roger Rowland get the detail. Beacham is staying at the large estate house owned by big-wig, The Honorable James Bancroft. Bancroft is played by Jack Hedley. Sewell and Mower also move into the house so they can keep a close eye on Beacham. Hedley is also financing a play Beacham will be in during her stay.

Two nights into the detail and one of the estate dogs is found dead outside of Beacham's bedroom window. The next day, Hedley, Beacham and Mower are in an auto wreck after the Land Rover they are in has a brake failure.

Beacham still carries on with the rehearsals for the play. During one of these rehearsals, a small bomb goes off in Beacham's dressing room. She is now completely rattled.

Sewell and Mower dig deep into the background of Hedley and several others. They discover that Hedley is behind everything. He thought these stunts would drive Beacham into his arms, as well as bump up the box office for the play.

Big-wig with or not, a peeved Sewell has Hedley arrested and charged.

Arthur Daley, a small-time conman, hires former boxer Terry McCann to be his 'minder', so Terry can protect him (Arthur) from other, small-time, crooks. While Terry is trying his hardest to satisfy his employer's demands, and putting his own life at risk, Arthur is busy exploiting Terry for all he is worth. For, when other people hire Terry's services, through Arthur, Arthur usually keeps most of Terry's share of the money for himself, by misleading the hard-working Terry as to the amount of money, he (as Terry's agent) is receiving on Terry's behalf.

Minder: Season 1, Episode 1 Gunfight at the O.K. Laundrette (29 Oct. 1979)

Terry McCann, an ex-boxer who has served a prison term is working for dodgy car salesman Arthur Daley. Alfie Cavallo, a friend of Arthur's, asks for the loan of Terry's services when he goes to collect the takings from one of the laundrettes he owns. However, Alfie and Terry walk in on an armed robbery by a trio who claim to be the Independent Rastafarian Army. Alfie is shot and the two men are taken hostage along with elderly customer Mrs. Mayhew. An overnight siege takes place. Because of his form Terry is suspected by the police of being an accomplice but he proves himself to be the hero of the day with Mrs. Mayhew vouching for the fact that he defused a very dangerous situation. Arthur is hopeful that he can make money by selling Terry's story to the press and foresees the start of a beautiful friendship.

After 18 months of hard work by Eliot Ness and the Untouchables, Al Capone is convicted of tax evasion and sent to prison. It's only the start however for the law enforcement officers as Capone has left a fully functioning mob empire intact. Soon however, Capone's top enforcer, Frank Nitti, is eliminating some of his competition for control of that empire. In the process of fighting Nitti, Ness recruits a new member of the squad, one-time barber Enrico Rossi who had volunteered to testify against the crime boss after witnessing a shooting. Nitti's main competitor for Al Capone's empty chair is the mob's bookkeeper, Jake Guzik. Ness' plan is to create a rift between the two by focusing on Nitti's personal holdings and leaving the others alone. Guzik proves to be a far more intelligent opponent than Ness may have given him credit for so he tries to get a dead mobsters wife, Guzik's niece, to inform on the bookkeeper.

He's also posed as an artist's model for a portrait of St. George (Emile's face is the dragon's), and the marquise's granddaughter falls in love first with his visage and then him.
