When he wakes up the morning after the night before - he had attended a friend's stag party - he finds that he is married to the very beautiful woman who popped out of the cake - and who doesn't speak a word of English. Despite his initial protestations, he comes to like married life and even changes his cartoon character from a super spy to a somewhat harried husband. When after several months he decides to kill off Bash's wife in the cartoon, his wife misinterprets his intentions and disappears. Which leads the police to charge him with murder.

Nifty and fast-paced pre-Code film has Helen Chandler homeless and starving, so she tosses a brick through a drugstore window so she can be arrested and get some food and sleep. But the tables are turned by big-hearted cop (Charles Bickford), who takes her under his wing and into his apartment to look after her. He also gets her a job as a chorus girl where she attracts the attention of slimy Val (George Meeker) who preys upon women. Seems he's also been robbing fading star Fern Cavan (Mayo Methot) blind, and when she quits her starring role in the show, he cleans out her safe and leaves her flat, using the money to lure Chandler into his "high life." Chandler takes the bait after she gives up waiting for Bickford to take a romantic interest in her. But when the faded star realizes her money is gone, she goes into action.

The enthusiastic duo may have a tuneful Broadway hit on their hands. A backer mandates they hire an English actress to star, and agent Allen Jenkins (as J. Van Courtland) goes to pick her up. But Mr. Jenkins accidentally signs similarly named Ruby Keeler (as Jane Clarke), putting the show in jeopardy - she's no actress, but she is "Ready, Willing and Able".

Although the dead woman allowed him to live with her rent free, her busy social life included four other lovers, all of whom were unaware of the other's existence. When they were scheduled to arrive, Leon would discreetly leave the apartment, but if they arrived unexpectedly, he would perversely hide in the wardrobe. The plot becomes even more complicated when Maigret finds out that Leon was in the wardrobe when the murder was allegedly committed.

However, as the investigation is stepped up, the other passengers start turning up dead. It is then up to the last remaining two to solve the case, before they become the next victims.
