Richard Grant is a lawyer who believes that murder under certain circumstances is justifiable. Richard's daughter, Barbara, takes her dad to a dinner party hosted by Richard's old friend, wealthy playboy, Gordon Rich. Gordon tells Richard that he and Barbara plan to marry. Richard threatens Gordon's life if he marries Barbara. Richard is unaware that Barbara has changed her mind and goes into Gordon's room, undetected, and kills him and stages a suicide.

After Marjorie West (Kay Francis), Gordon's mistress, discovers evidence that shows Richard was the killer, he threatens her life as well.

Later, confronting them, he is badly beaten and is taken to a hospital where he meets nurse Martha Rollins (Marjorie Reynolds), who falls in love with him. They go to New Rochelle where he is wounded attempting another robbery. Martha performs the necessary surgery, believing that he will give up his life of crime. When she finds him in New York with another girl, Martha gives the police his picture and hideout location, but he escapes the police trap. He flees to Los Angeles where he meets wealthy divorcee Mrs. Arthur Vinson (Jacqueline De Wit), whose confidence he wins in order to systematically rob her society friends' jewels. . .

Father Amian's church is in poor shape and needs an expensive new roof. At a mid-week service, a stranger leaves a $10 bill in the collection plate. The stranger becomes a regular attendee and continues to make generous donations. Turns out the stranger, Mr. Sheridan, has taken to praying for winners and, since doing so, has had nothing but success at the track, winning bet after bet. Sheridan convinces Father Amian to place a bet on a sure thing and Amian regrets his rash act as soon as it's done. Feeling guilty, he prays for the horse not to win, but with a surprising conclusion.


Leon Gorwald is a traveling salesman who stops in a small town to buy gas. He crosses the street against the light and a local policeman starts writing him a ticket for jaywalking. Gorwald tries to bribe the officer and is promptly arrested and put in a jail cell awaiting the return of the local judge. In the meantime, the local sheriff has arrested a stranger for murdering a local girl. Things get desperate when a local mob decide to lynch the stranger, but by now he has overpowered the sheriff and forced Gorwald to change clothes. The mob drags Gorwald away but things turn out OK for him, in more ways than one.
