Miss Kite derides all around her out of fear of aging and loss of beauty, while her friend Mr. Larkcom sells mediocre phonograph records though he'd secretly love to be a concert pianist. Into the lives of these and other unhappy residents comes a mysterious stranger, under whose influence they each begin to see the possibility of happiness. But the cynical Mr. Wright prefers to see them in misery and plots to thwart the angelic stranger who lives in the back room of the third floor.

After a young Duke decides Mary is unsuitable - the fact she will not inherit is the main stumbling point - Cora and her mother-in-law the Dowager Countess plot to have Mary marry the new heir, a third cousin named Matthew Crawley. Below stairs a new valet, John Bates arrives. He and the Earl of Grantham served together in the Boer War and the fact that Bates is lame and uses a cane to get about raises more than a few eyebrows. There's also a bit of ill-feeling as first footman Thomas had hoped to be promoted to the valet position. He begins to spread rumors that Bates can't do the job and Carson the butler decides that he just won't do.

Diana Taylor is considering leaving her husband, Jack, who has been trying but failing to build his own business as a builder/decorator. Her suitor, Jimmy Thompson, is Jack's army friend. Jack deduces the relationship and, when Jimmy comes to Jack's business to discuss the situation, a fight ensues. A gun is produced and one of them is killed, but a subsequent fire makes it difficult to determine which man has died. While the police search for the survivor, Diana struggles with her feelings.

Paris Trout (Dennis Hopper), a cruel man who abuses his wife, Hanna (Barbara Hershey), also runs a store where he lends out money. When he goes to collect on a loan, Paris instead shoots two innocent black townspeople, a woman and her 12-year-old daughter. After the girl dies, Paris is arrested and put on trial, although he believes he has done nothing wrong. Harry Seagraves (Ed Harris), Paris' lawyer, must defend him even as he despises what Paris has done.

In the South Pacific, the passengers of a boat must disembark prematurely at the island of Pago Pago due to a cholera scare. Among them are missionaries Alfred Davidson (Walter Huston) and his wife (Beulah Bondi), and a spirited prostitute, Sadie Thompson (Joan Crawford). On the island, Thompson lives it up with the American soldiers stationed in the village, and captures the heart of Sgt. Tim O'Hara (William Gargan). But Thompson's wild ways are too much for Davidson, who tries to convert her.

Anna Lee is our heroine, a young English chorus girl; hungry and out of luck in New York and about to board ship for home, she is befriended by a young lawyer who invites her over for a meal. Once inside his apartment, however, the man is promptly murdered by a gang of thugs headed by big smoothy Francis L. Sullivan. Noting that Lee is "the only person alive who knows that we were in that apartment last night"—at least that's what he thinks at the time—Sullivan subtly trails her.

The action moves to London, where the gang attempts to prevent Lee from returning to New York, where the imminent execution of an innocent fall guy will close the case.

A young woman finds herself as the intended victim of a murder plot on a transatlantic flight from London to New York.

Nancy is being threatened by Harry Gulliver, a man with whom Tracy during the Korean War. Gulliver was the machine gunner on Tracy's plane and had been unable to pull the trigger when they were attacked by enemy planes. Now Gulliver plans to kill Nancy, but once again he cannot pull the trigger when Tracy recounts the Korean incident.

Three runaways from Oregon, George, Jack and Sharon Morgan are squatting in an abandoned house. Sharon is very sick, but money is very limited. George decided to break into a local pharmacy after hours to obtain some medicine.

With the child-welfare authorities breathing down his neck, orphaned teenager George Morgan (played by future ChiPs costar Larry Wilcox) desperately tries to hold his family together. Going on the run with his younger siblings, George is forced to steal medicine for his ailing sister--and as a result, faces charges of kidnapping and homicide. Joining Stone (Karl Malden) and Keller (Michael Douglas) as the obligatory Adult Authority Figures in this tense episode is Jeanette Nolan in the role of a judge.

After identifying one of the women in the pictures, she and he go on a search through the countryside to try to locate her missing brother whose camera they believe it to be. Unfortunately, the police also appear to be on his trail, believing that he has just committed a robbery at a jewellery shop.

A newspaper cutting provides the Champions with a lead that takes them from an Alpine ski resort to a Cambridge laboratory, the workplace of Dr. Newman, an aircraft designer whose plans for a high speed plane were shelved by the British and who is now selling them to the Chinese. Sharron discovers that the components are being shipped out disguised as car parts and will be sufficient to make two hundred and fifty Ghost Planes. She is caught and locked in a freezer from where she must exercise her telepathic powers to alert her fellow Champions to her plight and the progress of the aircraft.

Liz Kross descends the staircases at Charing Cross tube station, shedding her clothes as she goes and ending up nude on the platform where a bystander saves her from stepping in front of a train. She is arrested and referred to Dr Corder who discovers that she is working as a waitress and a stripper to finance an operation for her father, a fact which he resents and has caused her to subconsciously rebel.

The mobster doesn't stand to gain financially. But Mannix is determined to find the truth.
