This Republic murder mystery starts with a radio broadcast by Greg Sherman who solves cases on the air that the local police cannot solve. As he names the perpetrator of a recent murder we see the criminal, who is listening to the show, become alarmed and start to make his escape. The scene shifts to the police department where the chief, fearing for his job, assigns officers to get something, anything, on Sherman and get him off the air.

Meanwhile, Greg and his pretty wife Beth are parting company. He's going to a party and she's going to visit her pregnant sister in the hospital. The next morning Greg wakes up and nudges his sleeping wife. When she doesn't respond, he pulls off the covers and finds not his wife but a strange woman, dead and with the murder knife still sticking up out of her back.

While he's still recovering from the shock, Beth walks into the bedroom. Thinking that she has discovered her husband with another woman, she leaves and calls the police. The police are delighted of course, but Greg escapes as they are arresting him. Now he must solve the mystery by himself.

(Apparently, Jim the reviewer fell asleep at this point, because Sherman doesn't actually have to solve the mystery by himself; he and his wife get back together and solve it together. I fell asleep a bit later, so I can't report on anything beyond this point, either.)

They Made Me a Killer (1946)

After his brother is killed in an accident, Tom Durling quits his job and drives across country. He gives an attractive girl a ride and is subsequently forced at gun point to be the driver in a bank robbery. During the crime another innocent man, Steve Reynolds, is involved and killed in the escape. After a high-speed chase, the car crashes and Durling is knocked unconscious. The bandits get away, the police arrest Durling and refuse to believe that he isn't one of the robbers.

Durling escapes the police then later teams with Reynolds' sister in an attempt to prove his innocence. The trail leads to a small roadside diner where the two end up finding the gang hiding out in the building's basement. They go undercover, she as a waitress and Durling joining the gang. In the end, they trick the criminals into confessing their crimes. Durling's reputation is saved, and the criminals, led by a Ma Barker-type mom, get shot up.

Mannix has finally quit the detective agency for good and is out on his own. Mannix encounters a deaf woman who has witnesses a criminal talking at a pay telephone, discussing a kidnapping. She has made out certain key words because of her ability to read lips. Mannix gets her to remember enough of the conversation so that he can proceed in his investigation. The detective finds a rich man who says his wife has been kidnapped. It turns out that the situation is much different than the rich man portrays, with the criminal anxious to tie up all loose ends, meaning killing Mannix and the deaf woman.

The pieces are gradually being stolen from the regiment and replaced with fake replicas. Suspecting an inside job, the regimental general wants Gideon to find out who is stealing the silver pieces. To complicate the investigation, it must be done discretely to avoid any public scandal.

Nineteen-year-old Ruth Robbins is cynical about marriage because of her work for Los Angeles divorce lawyer Albert Hartman. When her pregnant next-door neighbor tries to commit suicide after her husband leaves her, Ruth calls for an ambulance. Ambulance doctor Myron Brown revives the woman and then bathes Ruth's foot, which was injured during the rescue. He and Ruth become friendly as do Clarence Howe, the ambulance nurse, and Betty Merrick, Ruth's roommate.

On a visit to the hospital, Myron, suspecting that Ruth's appendix is enlarged, tricks her into an examination and advises her to watch her diet. The two begin to fall in love, but Myron explains that he can only have a professional interest in Ruth as it will be several years before he can support a wife. Shortly afterwards, however, he offers to leave medicine so that they can get married, as he cannot live without her. Ruth responds that she has no faith in lasting marriage and offers to live with him without marriage. He refuses.

When Ruth reveals her problems to Hartman, he offers to distract her from her romantic dilemma. He establishes Ruth in an elegant apartment in his building, with no strings attached. Ruth moves in with Betty, but Clarence, who strongly disapproves, insists that Betty move out. Hartman asks Ruth to become his mistress, but she refuses because she does not love him. Myron learns about the apartment from Clarence and, believing that Ruth is having an affair with Hartman, refuses to see her. Ruth moves out and quits her job, but cannot find another one without references from Hartman.

One night, Ruth collapses with an attack of appendicitis. Clarence and Myron answer the landlady's call and rush her to the hospital. Because no doctor is available to operate, Myron performs the surgery. Ruth recovers and this time when Myron proposes, she accepts.

Kitty Brent helps him with some steamship tickets, so Tom wants to do something nice in return. Kitty says her marriage to fiancé Kenneth is on hold until he can sell an insurance policy to a milkman named Baglipp. An overly optimistic Tom assures her she'll be married by the next morning. His schemes to make Baglipp take the policy ends up getting Tom and Kitty into all kinds of trouble, including involvement with a robbery.

By morning, both their sweethearts are exasperated. June breaks off her engagement with Tom, who realizes that overnight he's fallen for Kitty. As soon as she begins feeling the same way, Tom assures her that she might end up married this very day.

When Joan learns of the affair, she warns Diane that to marry, she must first seek approval from the parole board, which will be obligated to inform Larry.

Despite all of the help that she has received from Joan, Diane accuses Joan of trying to sabotage her romance and her parole after Diane is arrested for a drug theft at the hospital that she did not commit. Larry informs Diane that Joan has caused the charges to be dismissed.

After the stock market crash of 1929, the Colt-Stratton family is forced to rent their yacht to the nouveau riche at the behest of Nella Fitzgerald, including gambler Barry Forbes and his sidekick Freddy Finn. When Freddy rigs the yacht's roulette wheel to respond to his saxophone, he is caught, but moments later, Captain "Sunny Jim" Roberts runs the yacht aground on the South Sea Island of Malakamokolu, ruled by Queen Malakamokalu, a White woman, who takes the passengers as forced labor. Tiring them, she offers to release them if Barry stays to marry her. However, once she hears Freddy play his saxophone, she falls in love with him and plans to blow up the yacht with a bomb. Barry manages to rescue the passengers, not the boat, and they accept their new home in the tropics.

Nick discovers that the men responsible for the agent's death are members of an international counterfeiting ring, using the casino to pass the bogus money.
