Winifred Norton is found stabbed to death after an argument with her boyfriend, Bill Rose. Bill is immediately targeted by police because his knife and footprints are found at the murder scene. Bill claims he is set up and judged unfairly because he is a Mod.
Bill's sister Mary—who is friends with Commander George Gideon's daughter—asks Gideon to look into the case. Gideon and Detective Chief Inspector David Keen dig deeper, uncovering witness inconsistencies and pointing toward Winifred's stepfather, Fred Norton.
