Simon Templar arrives in Rome and attends a high society charity ball hosted by Countess Kristina Rovagna, quickly suspecting the fund-raising efforts are a sham. After a young street thief named Franco is struck by a taxi driver named Marco de Cesari, Simon takes the boy in and learns from Father Bellini that the orphanage is receiving only a fraction of the donations. Simon identifies Aldo Petri as a central figure in the embezzlement and confronts the Countess with her vaudeville past. He wagers that he can steal her valuable necklace to cover the missing funds, pulling off a daring dinner party heist with the help of Franco and his gang.
