A private plane crashes in the California mountains and a 5-year-old boy survives. Little else is known except the child is an orphan.

Susan Chase believes the boy could be hers. Before she was wed to lawyer Bill Chase, she was involved with a Marine during the war, and became suicidal later, putting their child up for adoption. Bill has never been told Susan's secret.

Newspaper reporter Phyllis Horn investigates the crash. She, too, has a secret, having given birth after a divorce from husband Bob Duffy, who has since remarried.

A third woman, Ann Lawrence, turns up at the crash site as well. Ann was once a chorus girl, involved with wealthy Gordon Crossley, who spurned her after she became pregnant. Scorned, Ann bludgeoned him to death, and served five years in prison for manslaughter, giving up the baby. The boy appears to be hers, but she believes Susan is better qualified to give the child a good home.

The Bey is shot by a sniper and tribesmen host the trio but when the Bey learns that Said, his supposed aide, has paid them to kill him, he resolves to resume his rule. The travelers still have to reach the capital, however, and face another attempt on the Bey's life.

Criminal Ace Connors agrees to return to New York and stand trial for stealing $500,000 worth of bonds so he can serve a light five-year sentence and enjoy his loot (safely stowed away in the cover of a cook book) when he gets out. Detective Bob Simms is tasked with escorting Connors back to New York.

With five days for the cross-country trip, Connors plans for stops in Texas and New Orleans to have a few final days of fun before he goes to prison. Ricki Woodner, a con artist who met Connors at his hotel, is persuaded by Fly Feletti (a bitter colleague of Connors) to get close to Connors and take the bonds. She joins Connors and Simms on the train and Ricki and Ace start falling for each other.

Feletti wants the bonds and keeps an eye on Ricki to make sure she doesn't double-cross him. After a romantic detour into Mexico, Ace, Ricki, and Simms head to New Orleans for the Mardi Gras celebration, with Feletti close behind.

She meets washed-up actress Donny (Blanche Sweet) on the lot and they become friends. Frank is fired from his studio and the new director finds that Frank's storyline is actually a copy of 'Rainbow Girls,' the Broadway stage play. They call Jimmy, the author and Dixie's boyfriend, for the rights and he goes to Hollywood to produce it as a movie.

Dixie gets the lead, but things start going wrong when dizzy Dixie, spurred on by the fired Director Buelow, thinks that she is better than the picture or the studio and starts to make demands.

Dr. Travis is shot by the post master in a remote Scottish village as he tries to ring the police and his body later found dumped in London. He is one of several scientists who have disappeared after going to work on something called Project Zero, allegedly under government auspices but actually a rogue project headed by one Dr. Voss.

Richard infiltrates the group by posing as a computer expert and travels to their Scottish base, followed by Sharron and Craig,but his cover is blown and a collar of explosives put around his neck.

He is rescued by the other Champions, who discover that the Project is making a fission gun, which will detonate nuclear warheads. The Champions lead the captive scientists in an attack on the control room but Voss and his staff escape in a plane and use the fission gun to fire on the Champions.

Among the suspects are agents of a foreign power wishing to stop Dayton's chemicals being sent to use on the foreign power in the form of the same poison gas that killed Dayton, Dayton's business partners who will have Dayton's share of the business come to them after Dayton's death and the actual inventor of the chemical who has been cheated out of profits and recognition by Dayton.
