There ensues a terrific battle of wits involving the clever but basically "moral" teller, and the cunning and totally uninhibited bank robber, which involves several other people in ways which cannot be revealed here.

After a rocky start, Joe and Freddie become the best of friends. Meanwhile, the boy's father and the police, thinking Freddie has been kidnapped, close in on Joe.

Wisecracking reporter turned public relations man Aloysius K. Reilley dreams up the idea of ginning up interest in the lackluster pair by inventing a tabloid romance between the two, which hopefully will ignite their popularity and respective careers. That's not going to be easy because the former neighbors already dislike each other, but Reilly and their handlers have a few tricks up their sleeves for the pair of reluctant lovebirds and vice-versa.

The wealthy Van Dyke family are constantly in the media for outrageous behavior, much to the frustration of patriarch Dan Van Dyke. His self-centered, bubble-headed wife has a fondness for foreign imports, including "pet projects" like dancers and such. His spoiled children Tony and Carol have constant run-ins with the law.

When Dan himself ends up in the clink for five years for tax evasion, he becomes bunk-mates with ex-bootlegger Joe "Spots" Ricardi. Ricardi lectures him on being such a push-over for an out-of-control family, so a dying Dan makes Ricardi his estate trustee once he is released from prison.

Ricardi is thrust into high society and must do everything he once nagged Dan to do in order to bring the unruly brats under control. This is even more difficult than it seems as Carol defies him at every turn, and his old gang is trying to get him back in the business.

Annie asks David if he would marry her again if he could have the time over again and David confides that he misses his freedom and so probably wouldn't. Later that day, an official from the town where they got married calls to see David. He explains that owing to a state boundary dispute, all couples married between 1936 and 1939 in the county were not legally married. David decides to have fun with this fact, but unbeknown to him, the county official calls to see Annie too and disaster results.

A flashback to the Victorian era reveals she is the scandalous Mrs. Erlynne, who in middle age becomes associated with Lord Arthur Windermere, whose young and beautiful but socially conservative wife Margaret tends to judge others harshly. Lord Windermere financially supports Mrs. Erlynne, allowing her to live in the elegant manner to which she is accustomed, and the couple become the favourite subject of local gossips.

When Margaret hears the stories, she mistakenly believes the two are involved in a clandestine affair and subsequently succumbs to the charms of Lord Robert Darlington, who has made no secret of his ongoing romantic interest in her. However, she leaves her fan - the one Robert offered her for her birthday - in Robert's house. In order to ensure the younger woman does not make the same mistakes she has in the past, Mrs. Erlynne reveals a shocking secret: she is Lady Windermere's mother, whom Margaret believed had died after the woman abandoned her husband and daughter for another man. Meanwhile, Henry Miggs, the museum owner find the body and is ready to call the police but his handyman, Clutch Tracy tells him to conceal it and avoid suspicion. From this point on it is a game of where-is-the-body....and the stolen South American diamonds Wells was carrying.

As Drake digs into the social life of Prague by going to a party being organised by Milos Kaldor, he's drugged and arrested for drunk driving and seriously injuring a pedestrian. It appears Kaldor is in charge of a blackmail ring and has been keeping Desmond as a hostage. Drake has to get him and his family out of Prague before, Desmond's value drops to nil, but there's more to it than it first appears.
