The Blue Lamp (1950)

In the Paddington area of west London in July 1949, PC George Dixon, a long-serving traditional policeman who is due to retire shortly, supervises new recruit Andy Mitchell, introducing him to the night beat. Dixon is unprepared when he is called to the scene of a robbery at a local cinema, where he comes face-to-face with Tom Riley, a desperate youth armed with a revolver. Dixon tries to convince Riley to surrender the weapon, but Riley panics and fires. Dixon dies in hospital some hours later.

On his beat, Mitchell finds a little girl playing with the discarded revolver. The child is eventually persuaded to lead police to the spot where she had found it. Police painstakingly drag a canal and find a raincoat that is traced to Diana Lewis's father, who remembers lending it to Riley.

In his arrogance, Riley goes to police headquarters to provide a false alibi for himself. All this accomplishes is to convince the police to place him under 24-hour watch. Riley is caught with the help of professional criminals and dog-track bookmakers, who identify him as he tries to hide in the crowd at White City greyhound track in West London. Credit for arresting Riley falls to young Mitchell.

Now the young girl is left to fend for herself against the merciless killer.

A gang of ex-convicts pull a holdup in an office building and the night-watchman is killed. The leader of the gang is wounded and they take refuge in a lodge belonging to the leader's wife. An insurance investigator registers at the lodge, posing as a doctor, and he is forced to operate on the wounded gang-leader. He recovers but is later murdered by a mute that works at the lodge. In the gunfight that follows, the investigator and the slain man's wife succeed in capturing what's left of the gang.

A murder of a striptease dancer becomes Danforth's top priority. He and second-in-command Detective Geddes cast their suspicions toward hoodlum Earl Swados, attempting to persuade another stripper, Mary Abbott, to turn state's evidence against him. After charging her with prostitution, the cops spread the word that Mary is going to inform on Swados and the local crime boss, Leonard Ustick.

Complications arise when another detective, Strauss, shoots an innocent bystander and police are falsely accused of beating three young men, causing neighborhood tensions to rise. Danforth takes a chance by releasing Mary, who had no intention of double-crossing the gangsters. Swados tries to murder her, chasing Mary through a brewery before Danforth and Geddes come to her rescue. Danforth resolves to stay on the job, no matter how long it takes.

The wealthy Lady Elizabeth Ferguson threatens to disinherit nephew John Bedford after accusing him of stealing from her. Bedford goes to a pub, where he becomes inebriated, creates a scene and is taken to jail.

The dead body of Lady Elizabeth is discovered by her ward, Priscilla Ames, who phones Scotland Yard. It doesn't take long for Inspector Trent to consider Bedford a suspect, but having been in a cell, Bedford's alibi is iron-clad.

A jail guard, Scoggins, was bribed to release Bedford for one hour on the night of the murder. When he demands more money, Bedford kills him, first establishing yet another alibi. A suspicious Trent manages to persuade Priscilla to try an elaborate ruse, hiring actress Vera Cavanaugh to pretend to be Lady Elizabeth's ghost. As everyone else in the room pretends to see nothing, a terrified Bedford confesses.

He picks up orphaned child Susan and is eventually reconciled with Jo and her friends. He returns to Tynsham House to tell Coker but finds he has gone and all the other residents have died of the sickness. Meanwhile the triffids' numbers are increasing.

The Day of the Triffids: Part Six (aired Oct 15, 1981)

Six years have passed. Jo and Bill are still at their heavily fortified commune with their friends, Susan and their own son David but the triffids' attacks are increasing, despite an electric fence. Jack Coker arrives by helicopter from the Isle of Wight, where triffids have been exterminated and invites Bill and his group to join him there. However next day they are visited by a para-military group calling itself the Emergency Council for the South East, who want to requisition the compound and move in more people. That night Bill gets all the visitors drunk and, after they have passed out, escapes with his friends and family to head for the Isle of Wight.

Saturday, December 6 - The Day of the Triffids: Parts 3 & 4

Escaping the mob Jo and Bill obtain triffid guns from the farm and have dinner in a show flat, planning to leave for the country next day. After seeing people's spokesman Jack Coker unsuccessfully try and rally the Army to help the blind, they join a group of organized survivors about to leave London next day. However Bill wakes in the night to find that he has been tied up.

The Day of the Triffids: Part Four (aired Oct 1, 1981)

Bill is captured by Coker and separated from Jo as both are forced to act as guides for groups of blind people. Bill is hand-cuffed to his charges on foraging raids but uses the opportunity to release himself when attacked by another group of scavengers. Nonetheless he agrees to stay with his group but, following illness which sweeps through the house and the triffids, attracted by noise, getting closer, he finds himself alone again and goes in search of Jo.

The Day of the Triffids: (Part One - aired Sep 10, 1981)

Bill Masen wakes in hospital after an eye operation, the result of being stung by a triffid, an oil-yielding plant at the farm where he works. Walter, his boss, believes the triffids to be intelligent, cunning beings with the capacity for malice and Bill was also stung, though not severely, as a child by a triffid in his father's garden. The previous night most of the country, including hospital staff, were thrilling at a spectacular meteor shower but Bill, on removing his bandages, discovers that everybody who witnessed it has been blinded by its intense light.

The Day of the Triffids: (Part Two - aired Sep 17, 1981)

Bill leaves hospital to find the city deserted and devoid of all amenities. He comes across a family whose little girl is still sighted and who want him to stay and help them but he presses on through streets filled with blind looters in search of other sighted survivors. He rescues Jo ,who slept through the meteor shower and is being used by a blind man as his guide (are you serious?), and they go to her house, only to find that her father and house-keeper have been stung to death by the now ambulant and deadlier triffids. On their way to find guns they are attacked by an angry mob of blind people.

Suspects include La Floret, the voyeuristic gardener; Di Brazzi, the new swimming instructor; Mrs. Clay, the summer school French mistress; an old professor who collects birds; and a philandering young teacher called Richard. The murders continue but Jill, a keen amateur detective, helps the police identify the unlikely killer.

Once more he gets arrested, released and captured by the villains. Once more Marty has to save him - this time by using a man under sedation for an operation as his medium.

Ellen Garfield refuses to marry fellow reporter Curt Devlin until he admits she is as good at her craft as any man. The two work for rival newspapers, and their ongoing efforts to better each other eventually leads to Ellen getting fired when Curt tricks her into misreporting the verdict of a murder trial. The tables are turned when she scoops him by getting the real perpetrator, Inez Cordoza, to confess to the crime. Forced to admit Ellen is a good reporter, he finally wins her hand.
