Half of London takes in interest in the long-running, complicated case of the inheritance of John Jarndyce Sr., a fortune disputed for generations in the Court of Chancery. The interests of orphaned juvenile relatives Richard Carstone and Ada Clare, wards of the court, are handled by attorney Kenge, hired by wealthy philanthropist John Jarndyce Jr., who even hired companion Esther Summerson and welcomes them in his fine home. Meanwhile sinister Mr. Tulkinghorn defends the interests of old Sir Leicester Dedlock and his younger wife, who has a secret past with destitute copyist and decorated veteran 'Nemo'.

After serving a prison sentence for his crimes, Tracy tries to pick up the pieces of his shattered life by searching for Edward's child.

A group of stuntmen at one studio in Hollywood call themselves "Lucky Devils," and regularly chant "A stuntman makes a bad husband and a husband makes a bad stuntman." It rings true when Slugger Jones is killed doing his last stunt right after his marriage. Skipper Clark and Bob Hughes prevent a down-and-out girl, Fran, from committing suicide, and help her get an acting job at the studio. Romance follows, with Skipper marrying Fran, but with the understanding he'll continue doing his stuntwork. But Skipper freezes during a stunt when the frantic Fran signals him to stop, and his friend Bob is nearly killed. This washes Skipper up in the stunt business, so he takes a job on the labor crew, shooting on location, and leaving the pregnant Fran in the care of a cheap doctor. When he gets a wire from the doctor telling him Fran must be sent to a hospital, he decides to do a dangerous stunt the other stuntmen refuse, going over a 30-foot waterfall in a rowboat for $200.

The story opens with a jewel robbery and shooting, with Dennis Price the thief (and two confederates who drop out of the story altogether). Price, who has been thought dead, lives under a new name with another underworld figure, Bonar Colleano. When the shooting victim dies, Bonar blackmails Price. Price visits his ex-wife who has remarried and blackmails her!

A good many complications ensue as the good wife tries to raise money, keep her husband out of the loop, and fend off the inquiries of the detective on the case who happens to know her. Furthermore, Price has two girl friends on the side. All this and more in a little over an hour.

Joan decides that turn-about is fair play and she picks another man to escort her around to various parties around New York. Eventually Jerry quits drinking and sends his girlfriend packing, just in time for Joan to take him back.
