Eric Bartell, promoter, arrives to dupe Stevens. When Ed Connors, New York racketeer arrives, Bartell is mysteriously murdered. Joel and Garda set out to investigate the murder.

Just before Christmas, Joe Miracle, a returning WWII war hero, comes home to learn that gangster Barney Teener has taken over his nightclub and murdered Joe's partner. Joe loots the club's safe for $100,000 and then finds sanctuary in a settlement house ran by Jenny Jones. Mistaking him for a down-and-out musician, she helps him understand the importance of her work. "Early" Byrd, a newspaper columnist, learns Joe's true identity and writes a column that puts Barney on his trail. The gangsters recover the money, after setting fire to the settlement house, but Joe steals it again, and returns to the gutted welfare house disguised as Santa Claus, and gives the money to Jenny to rebuild. There, Tenner and his gang catch up to Joe.

The entire population of Hambledown are being helped into trucks by military men. Next morning she finds herself the only person in the village.When Department 'S' comes to investigate, a patch of scorched earth in a field where a gate post has been freshly painted seems to point to evacuation from an ecological disaster.

John Howard plays one of a group of scientists who gather some criminals off of Alcatraz and offer them their freedom if they'll take part in an atomic experiment. Before this is carried off one of the men murders another but a nurse ends up taking the fall for it. Howard and the nurse end up teaming up to try and find out what really happened and why.
