All Through the Night (1942)

Runyonesque Broadway gamblers turn patriotic when they stumble onto a cell of Nazi saboteurs.

When noted gambler Alfred "Gloves" Donahue (Humphrey Bogart) makes a trip to his local bakery to see why his cheesecake hasn't been delivered, he sees nightclub singer Leda Hamilton (Kaaren Verne) leaving the bakery, and finds that his favorite baker has been murdered. Donahue becomes the prime suspect in the case, so he has to take matters into his own hands to clear his name. Things take a shocking turn when he discovers that a Nazi spy ring may have had a hand in the poor baker's death.

Friday, April 28 - Checkmate: Terror from the East

Checkmate (1960–1962): Terror from the East (Season 1 Episode 14 - aired 7 January 1961)

A missionary arrives from the east and contacts Checkmate to warn them about a plot to kill Tom Lin, a Chinese patriot currently in hiding in San Francisco; he has apparently been shot in the arm while trying to find Lin and warn him of the danger he is in. It soon turns out, however, that the missionary is actually an assassin sent to kill the daughter of Win Lee, a former Chinese warlord also residing in San Francisco.

In his next to last acting role Charles Laughton plays a clergyman recently returned from the Far East looking for someone of prominence in the San Francisco community of Chinatown. Upon disembarking from the boat he gets shot by some Oriental gentleman who later turns up dead.

As it turns out, Laughton is on his way to hire the Checkmate team to find the individual in Chinatown he's looking for.

Thursday, April 27 - It Happened in Hollywood

It Happened in Hollywood (1937)

Orphaned and hospitalized, young Billy (Billy Burrud) is thrilled when his favorite silent movie hero, Tim Bart (Richard Dix), visits and invites the boy to drop by his California ranch house when he recovers. Unfortunately, when the advent of talking pictures destroys Tim's career, the cowboy actor goes bankrupt and loses his home. Meanwhile, Billy has fled the sick ward to find his idol, and Tim must enlist the help of his actress pal, Gloria (Fay Wray), to convince the lad he's still a star.

The central sequence in the film is the party Bart throws for little Billy. This features the real-life stand-ins for a number of Hollywood's biggest names: Charlie Chaplin, Victor McLaglen, Bing Crosby, Harold Lloyd, W. C. Fields, Greta Garbo, Mae West...

Young Marvin Blake (Richard Barthelmess) is the bright son of a poor tenant farmer in the American South, but he hopes to escape poverty by getting an education. When his father dies, Marvin is put through school by plantation owner Lane Norwood (Berton Churchill), and he becomes romantically involved with Lane's daughter, Madge (Bette Davis). But as time goes by, the nearby tenants claim they are being exploited by Lane, forcing Marvin to choose sides.

Tuesday, April 25 - Jeeves and Wooster: Brinkley Manor

Bertie is offended because Jeeves was dispatched to convince Anatole to return to Brinkley Court, so he continues to attempt to reunite Tuppy and Angela and bring Gussie and Madeline together; consequently, Gussie and Angela wind up engaged, and Madeline expects Bertie himself to marry her.

In order to bolster Gussie Fink-Nottle's courage to deliver the prizes and propose to Madeline Bassett, both Bertie and Jeeves spike his orange juice. Jeeves finally sorts out all the fractured relationships with a plan to set off the fire alarm.

Not to mention bicycling in the rain.

Monday, April 24 - Jeeves and Wooster: Hunger Strike

Bertie tries to play Cupid without Jeeves' help. His friend Gussie is in love with Madeline, who happens to be staying at Bertie's Aunt Dahlia's house, so Bertie arranges for him to visit. Meanwhile, Aunt Dahlia is desperate to coax 500 pounds out of her husband for her failing magazine, and Tuppy's engagement to Angela Travers is off. Bertie's recommendation to both of them is the same: don't eat the wonderful food of Aunt Dahlia's chef Anatole at dinner, to show how lovelorn and miserable they are. But they become much more miserable when Anatole gives notice.

Soon after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, cynical former newspaper correspondent John Royer (James Stewart) devises a scheme with his old editor and government agents to return to the Far East and smuggle out a vast amount of rubber for the war effort. Demanding the freedom and company of his ex-friend, Carnahan (Spencer Tracy), whom he betrayed in an exposé years earlier, Royer sails off into the hands of the Japanese with a motley crew, gold and the promise of covert government aid.

Managing Editor Sam Gatlin arrives in the afternoon and departs early the next morning, having assembled a morning newspaper for Los Angeles. During this implausibly active day in the life of a metropolitan newspaper, Sam and his wife Peggy argue about adopting a child. The reporter's grandson pilots a military plane from Honolulu to New York. A child is lost in the LA sewers (Gatlin composes a warning headline with picture: "Children Stay Out of These"). And copy boy Earl Collins considers quitting after failing to properly deliver a bet by city editor Jim Bathgate on the gender of children being born to a famous actress.

In San Francisco, Claire Alison and Dick Benedict try to avoid Martin Selkirk, who wants to break up their romance. Claire is upset because she is receiving letters from Selkirk containing articles about women who jilted their fiancés. The envelopes appear to have been addressed on a printing press. Selkirk finds them and breaks Benedict's jaw in a fight with brass knuckles. In Los Angeles Lorraine Jennings, Selkirk's former wife, contacts Claire offering help if Claire will testify on Lorraine's behalf in a custody battle over young David Selkirk. Claire visits them while Dick recuperates in the hospital. Claire spends the night at the Jennings home and hears a mysterious shot fired in the night. When she gets up to get a blanket, she finds a printing press in the linen closet. Claire leaves the house contacting Perry the next morning. The next day Ralph Jennings walks with a pronounced limp saying it is arthritis and Selkirk is found murdered at his beach house...

Crime lord Rocky Thorpe is impersonated by police officer John Franklin in order to infiltrate his organization and bring an end to it once and for all.

When the film begins, you learn that although the evil mobster, Rocky, is in prison, he's still running his criminal empire—and the police seem unable to stop them. But, when it just happens that there is an identical copy of Rocky and he works for the police, they decide to release the fake Rocky and have him infiltrate the mob and get evidence on their actions. However, because he doesn't know everything the real Rocky is supposed to know and because he doesn't act like the old Rocky, some of the gang becomes suspicious. But, when the REAL Rocky escapes , you know that something bad will happen…and fast!

When Bertie is instructed by Aunt Agatha to break up his uncle's engagement to a young waitress, he arranges a luncheon for his uncle and the girl's aunt, a common, gaudy woman -- who turns out to be the uncle's long-lost barmaid love. To escape Aunt Agatha's wrath, Bertie and Jeeves travel to the country residence of a friend to enjoy the local fair, where the bookie manages to handicap all the entrants on which Bertie and his friends bet.

Tuesday, April 18 - Fight for Your Lady

Fight for Your Lady (1937)

"Honest" Ham Hamilton needs money. A wrestling promoter in London, he places a wager and tells his champion Mike Scanlon to lose on purpose, but Mike wins anyway to impress Marcia Trent, an actress who has bet on him to win. Hamilton ingratiates himself with Marcia and her betrothed, singer Robert Densmore, then sees Robert become suicidally depressed after Marcia leaves him for Mike. On a night In Budapest, a drunken Robert is persuaded by equally inebriated reporter Jim Trask make a play for a nightclub singer, Marietta, and incur the wrath of her jealous beau, Spadissimo. He will be challenged to a duel and that will grant Robert's wish to die. Trouble ensues when Marietta becomes genuinely attracted to Robert and lies that his mother desperately needs him. Spadissimo takes pity until Marcia informs him Robert has no mother. The duel is on until Hamilton throws himself at the swordsman's mercy on Robert's behalf, disguised as his mother.

Ham Hamilton knows that gold-digger Marcia Trent is only after Robert Densmore for his money, so he tells Marcia that Robert is broke and she calls off the announced wedding. Disappointed and ready to die, Robert goes to Budapest, with Ham as his companion, where he decides he can best accomplish his death wish by making love to Marietta, whose husband, Spadissimo is the finest swordsman in all of Europe and will surely kill him in a duel. The duel is on and Robert is very quickly on the losing end when Ham, knowing that Spadissimo has a mother complex, poses as Robert's mother and Spadissimo breaks down in tears, while Robert, Marietta and Ham make a quick exit stage left. Marcia, having learned that Robert is not broke enters ready to renew the romance, but takes her romance notion in another direction when the sees the size of the castle of the recently-jilted Spadissimo.
