A more eccentric neighbor, Baron Novakov (Bernard Rebel), confirms that he definitely heard two gunshots, not the sound of a car backfiring.
Colonel March and Inspector Ames (Ewan Roberts) call upon the young couple who reside there, Jim Hartley (Anthony Forwood) and his wife Betty (Patricia Owens), who show off a portrait of the murder victim, Jim's uncle, who has been deceased for four years. Seeing no corpse, no blood, and no evidence of wrongdoing, the Major apologizes for his apparently crazy story, but Colonel March refuses to give up easily, buying time until the pieces fit the puzzle.

In meeting Asa Hawks, a blind sidewalk preacher, and his assistant daughter, Sabbath Lily, Hazel, reacting against Asa's preachings and perhaps in knowing that they are perpetrating a scam, decides to start his own sidewalk church, one that does not believe in God, sin or evil, or that will collect offerings. In doing so, Haze, in turn, garners strong reactions from various people he meets. Asa doesn't like what "business" Haze may take away from him, while Lily is attracted to him. Haze obtains a groupie in the form of Enoch Emory, relatively new to the city and without friends, he searching for his place in life and something in which to believe. Another sidewalk preacher, Hoover Shoates, wants to profit off of what Haze has started. And while Haze initially lives with Leora Watts, who operates a "rooming house" which is more a single person brothel, he ends up moving into the same rooming house where Asa and Lily live, the landlady who has a motherly attachment to him. Through all these encounters, Haze ultimately demonstrates how strong his devotion is to his beliefs regardless of anyone or anything else.

Wednesday, October 30 - Newsfront
Newsfront (1978)
Phillip Noyce's historical and oddly prophetic first feature traces the story of two newsreel photographers in post-war Australia. Starting from the first waves of European post-war immigration, the storyruns through to the 1956 Olympic Games in Melbourne. As colour narrative and genuine black-and-white newsreel footage merge together with brilliantly recreated events(the 1954 Maitland flood scenes slip from story to newsreel quite seamlessly) so the stories of the characters, the newsreel industry (eventually to fall to television's instant power) and indeed the political development of the nation itself are cleverly intertwined in a multi-layered tour de force by editor John Scott.
