Tuesday, July 31 - Yellow Submarine & Hilda Crane & The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes: The Blue Carbuncle

Yellow Submarine (1968)

The music-loving inhabitants of Pepperland are under siege by the Blue Meanies, a nasty group of music-hating creatures. The Lord Mayor of Pepperland (Dick Emery) dispatches sailor Old Fred (Lance Percival) to Liverpool, England, where he is to recruit the help of the Beatles (John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Ringo Starr). The sympathetic Beatles ride a yellow submarine to the occupied Pepperland, where the Blue Meanies have no chance against the Fab Four's groovy tunes.

Hilda Crane (1956)

In the five years since she left Winona, her hometown, Hilda Crane has been divorced twice and acquired quite a dubious reputation. She returns from New York to a scolding mother, who hopes Hilda will have the good sense to marry successful builder Russell Burns and finally settle down.

A former professor and lover, Jacques DeLisle, is still holding a grudge because Hilda left him for an athlete. Although she doesn't love Russell, she resists and resents Jacques' aggressive romantic advances. She accepts a proposal of marriage from Russell, who intends to build her a new house.

Warned by a friend about Russell's possessive mother, including her way of feigning a heart condition, Hilda declines a $50,000 bribe from Mrs. Burns to leave town. She leaves the old woman slumped in a chair and proceeds to the church for the wedding. Mrs. Burns was not pretending this time, however, and has died.

Months later, still living in her mother-in-law's house, Hilda has begun to drink while Russell becomes indifferent to her and morose. A day comes when Hilda's mother castigates her again and she can take no more. Hilda swallows a bottle of sleeping pills, intent on committing suicide. But she survives, and is cheered by Russell's promise to restore their love and start building their new house.

The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (1984–1985): The Blue Carbuncle (Season 1 | Episode 7 - aired 5 June 1984)

On Christmas Eve, Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson try to determine how a fabulous blue carbuncle found its way down the gullet of a goose. It all starts that morning when the Commissioner who lives across the way asks Holmes' advice. On his way home, he came across a group of ruffians taking advantage of an elderly gentleman. His uniform scared them all off with the elderly gentleman leaving behind the goose. Holmes suggests that he simply keep it but he is soon back with the precious stone. Newspaper reports have reported the theft of the unique blue stone from a local hotel, but Holmes can't resist solving the mystery of how it got to its final destination.
