Mary (Francesca Annis) is a bright promising student. She has placed herself under great pressure to try to get into an Oxbridge university.
The episode opens with Mary who is babysitting to stage a robbery and ties herself up. Her hysterical reaction arouses suspicion.
The neighbourhood is on the lookout for the culprit. An odd job man called Jones with an interest in gardening is arrested for the robbery.
The police superintendent (Tony Steedman) is not convinced that Jones is the culprit and thinks that he is mentally ill.
Dr Corder finds himself taking an interest in both Mary and Jones. Corder figures that Jones is a recovering alcoholic who is on the edge of a breakdown.
