The story follows Chris Kirk (played by Howard Knight), a timid, 15-year-old boy. He has been given a gun by his demanding police surgeon father who is trying to toughen him up. When a local hoodlum threatens Chris with a knife, the frightened boy shoots him. Thinking the hood may be dead, and terrified of his father's reaction, Chris runs away, prompting a police search led by Commander Gideon.
