They meet the local muckety-mucks, including wealthy Charles Hingelman, owner of a valuable gold mine, who starts to romance Freddie. When Blackie shows up while tracking Freddie down, complications and hilarious chaos ensue.

Not unmindful that Martha's interest in Timothy seems renewed, he hires Mary to stay at the house as an employee and they go out on the town virtually every night. Mary meanwhile has a positive effect on other members of the household: daughter Katherine is in love with Michael, the communism-spouting chauffeur, and seeks her advice; and son Tim is forced to take over the neglected business to keep it from running downhill, which Timothy had been trying unsuccessfully to get him to do. Complications arise with the various family members' love interest struggles,. and Mary is caught in the middle.

As a result of the incident, Vanner's fiancée broke off their engagement, and he resigned from his job. He later felt compelled to visit the dead man's widow, and ended up working on her ranch. But, as he now explains to the priest, the past has quickly caught up with him.

Friday, January 23 - Highway Patrol: Gem Robbery & Wounded


Acting in concert with gemologist Harold Corbett, George Haley steals $300,000 in rough-cut gems from courier Raymond Harris by threatening to kill his family. Harris reports the robbery, but is reluctant to describe Haley. Corbett hides the gems in the collar of his German shepherd Chief, then arranges for Haley to take the train to Capital City for a flight to Mexico with Chief. Existing leads enable Dan Mathews and Sergeant Walters to arrest Corbett and they finally convince Harris to describe Haley. His description leads them to the train depot where they arrest Haley but are unable to find the gems. The final piece of the puzzle falls into place when Dan asks Corbett's secretary Laura Nelson to remove Chief's collar.


Two wanted holdup men (Monty and Jack) abduct Dr. Elliott and take him to a heavily wooded area to extract a bullet from Jack's shoulder. They are spotted by 10-year old Tommy Evans, who was playing nearby. Tommy returns to his home and calls the Highway Patrol. Dan Mathews and Sergeant Morris respond, but Tommy disregards Dan's directions to stay away from the men and finds himself captured and roughly treated by the increasingly desperate felons. Dan uses a ruse to get Tommy away from the situation, after which he and Sergeant Morris find themselves in an armed confrontation with Monty and Jack. They are handicapped by the necessity to avoid injury to Dr. Elliott, but Tommy manages to help out one last time.

Mobster Joe Sapelli (Gerald Mohr), who has ties to the pawn broker, believes Gloria is innocent and pays for her bail. The district attorney (Robert Rockwell) now asks Gloria to feign interest in Sapelli in order to take down his organization.

Max Thursday is an alcoholic former cop working as a house detective at his pal Smitty's rundown hotel. Max's ex-wife Georgia visits him in a panic because their young son Jeff and her brother Fred Mace are both missing. She was warned to not inform the police by Dr. Elder, Fred's business acquaintance.

While drunk, Max confronts Dr. Elder about his missing son, but the doctor knocks him unconscious from behind. Max awakens and is taken to police headquarters for questioning. Max soon learns that Dr. Elder has been killed and that he has become the prime suspect. Georgia gives the cops a false alibi for Max, and the police release him.

Now sober, Max learns that the doctor was involved in a diamond-smuggling operation with Varkas, a known criminal. He learns from Varkas' moll Angel that the gangster's men are holding Fred hostage. Max is shot in the arm by thugs working for Varkas, and Georgia stitches his wounds. When he recovers, Max goes to Varkas' warehouse to look for Mace, where he discovers that Varkas and his bodyguards are all dead.

Max finally realizes that his old friend Smitty is behind the entire scheme. Fred and little Jeff are rescued, and Max and Georgia reunite to welcome their son home.

They separate and Larry returns to New York City, where he takes up again with playwright Griselda Vaughn (Constance Bennett), with whom he was involved before his marriage.

Karin travels to New York to thwart the romance and win her husband back by masquerading as her spurious twin sister Katherine Borg, a wild, amoral "modern" woman. Larry is fascinated by Karin, in the guise of Katherine, but he quickly discovers the truth. He continues to play along, nearly seducing his wife's purported twin sister, but stopping short each time. Karin and Larry eventually reunite during a chase on the ski slopes, and all is forgiven.

Two men offer to take Doane's body to a hospital. Janet meets Steve Morgan (William Henry), a private detective who offers to help her. Steve goes to Sam Priestly (Kenne Duncan), the insurance man for the Doane-Armstrong company. He informs Steve the money has already been pair to Armstrong and throws him out. He visits Rita, who offers him cash if he can find her husband's girlfriend, and he trails Armstrong to the apartment of Lola Carson (Virginia Christine) and later learns that Rita has been arrested for the murder of her husband. At night, Steve and Janet drive to the Doane-Armstrong plant and find the solutions to the various mysteries.

However, Joe does change his mind about being granted a last request, one the prison is obligated by law to fulfill: He asks for a woman's company so he can have some "fun" in the time that's left.

After asking around, two police detectives show up at the prison with a down-on-her-luck former "waitress" named Dora, who earlier that night had tried to drown herself. Dora, totally broke and feeling she has nothing to lose, has agreed to spend the night with Joe in his cell. As she sees it, the money she's being offered should be enough for "a decent funeral."

Wilson begins to realize that while his type of journalism does build circulation, it has also brought ruin and disgrace to some innocent victims. Lorelei and Pete are brought back by Wilson with his promise that "The Illustrated Press" will become a crusader against evil.
