Friday, January 23 - Highway Patrol: Gem Robbery & Wounded

Acting in concert with gemologist Harold Corbett, George Haley steals $300,000 in rough-cut gems from courier Raymond Harris by threatening to kill his family. Harris reports the robbery, but is reluctant to describe Haley. Corbett hides the gems in the collar of his German shepherd Chief, then arranges for Haley to take the train to Capital City for a flight to Mexico with Chief. Existing leads enable Dan Mathews and Sergeant Walters to arrest Corbett and they finally convince Harris to describe Haley. His description leads them to the train depot where they arrest Haley but are unable to find the gems. The final piece of the puzzle falls into place when Dan asks Corbett's secretary Laura Nelson to remove Chief's collar.

Two wanted holdup men (Monty and Jack) abduct Dr. Elliott and take him to a heavily wooded area to extract a bullet from Jack's shoulder. They are spotted by 10-year old Tommy Evans, who was playing nearby. Tommy returns to his home and calls the Highway Patrol. Dan Mathews and Sergeant Morris respond, but Tommy disregards Dan's directions to stay away from the men and finds himself captured and roughly treated by the increasingly desperate felons. Dan uses a ruse to get Tommy away from the situation, after which he and Sergeant Morris find themselves in an armed confrontation with Monty and Jack. They are handicapped by the necessity to avoid injury to Dr. Elliott, but Tommy manages to help out one last time.
