A nervous young man visits Maigret's Parisian apartment and, while left unattended, steals the Inspector's gun—a sensitive-triggered weapon gifted to him by the FBI. Maigret's search for the thief and the weapon spirals into a complex investigation involving a dead politician whose body was stuffed into a trunk, a deranged baron, and a high-living woman of dubious means. The trail ultimately takes Maigret from Paris across the English Channel to the luxurious Savoy Hotel in London.
