Marton, a high-strung toy dealer, seeks help from Inspector Maigret because he is afraid that his wife Giselle is trying to poison him. He threatens to shoot her as soon as he can prove her murderous intent. Madame Marton indignantly denies all accusations to Maigret. Despite an immediate investigation, in which a life insurance policy plays an important role, Maigret is unable to prevent Marton from being killed.
