Claire Foster (Brenda Marshall) elopes with George (Arthur Kennedy) after a brief courtship (and before the movie starts!), believing he is a wealthy businessman. Shortly after, she discovers he is actually a violent bank robber fleeing a nationwide manhunt. During a police shootout, George is wounded and sentenced to life in prison. Claire flees to California and operates a roadside motel and café on Highway 99, never mentioning her criminal husband and beginning to date a local man. Three years later, George escapes from prison and arrives at the motel to hide out, threatening to expose her if she doesn't cooperate.
