He and Ada's solicitor, Mr. Kenge, finds him a position with Mr. Bayham Badger who has agreed to supervise his studies. He will have to leave Bleak House however. At Mr. Bayham's home, Esther Summerson meets a young doctor, Mr. Allan Woodcort.

Richard and Ada want to become engaged but Mr. Jarndyce advises that they wait a time before making a firm commitment. Esther's friend Caddy Jellyby excitedly tells her that she's become engaged to her dance and deportment instructor, Prince Turveydrop. Tulkinghorn makes it clear that his first loyalties are to her husband. Although Lady Dedlock professes no further interest in Nemo, Tulkinghorn senses there is more interest than she professes. Mr. Guppy's infatuation with Esther continues but she again pushes him away. Esther is saddened to hear that Mr. Woodcourt has become a naval medical officer and will soon be going to sea. Richard isn't taking his medical studies seriously and Mr. Badger thinks him ill-suited for the profession. Richard agrees and expresses an interest in the law.

Lovejoy wonders why nobody has bothered to take Harry's claims seriously and uncovers an arrangement between Rudge and county archaeologist Nancy Phelan which results in the reverend's story being authenticated. Eric is less fortunate when he sells a grandfather clock to pernickety Mr. Rosenbaum,who is definitely not what he seems.

Antonio Gomez, a nearly down-and-out musician, is a widower with a young boy, Paco. Fighting to support his boy in the face of unemployment and neighbors who want custody of his son (something that here in Mexico City they might just obtain), Gomez argues with an ex-girlfriend over money she owes him. After he leaves, the girlfriend is murdered by the religious-fanatic serial killer terrorizing the city. When neighbors report the argument Gomez had with the dead girl, the police presume they are finally on the hot trail of the serial killer, and Gomez is their target. Gomez goes out to a pawnshop to buy his son a long-dreamed-of guitar and there meets a young woman with whom he goes looking for his son. What Gomez does not realize is that a police dragnet is closing in on him and that his boy Paco actually witnessed this most recent murder and has been trailing the killer. It's not long, though, before the killer is trailing the boy.

It rings true when Slugger Jones is killed doing his last stunt right after his marriage. Skipper Clark and Bob Hughes prevent a down-and-out girl, Fran, from committing suicide, and help her get an acting job at the studio. Romance follows, with Skipper marrying Fran, but with the understanding he'll continue doing his stuntwork. But Skipper freezes during a stunt when the frantic Fran signals him to stop, and his friend Bob is nearly killed. This washes Skipper up in the stunt business, so he takes a job on the labor crew, shooting on location, and leaving the pregnant Fran in the care of a cheap doctor. When he gets a wire from the doctor telling him Fran must be sent to a hospital, he decides to do a dangerous stunt the other stuntmen refuse, going over a 30-foot waterfall in a rowboat for $200.

The story opens with a jewel robbery and shooting, with Dennis Price the thief (and two confederates who drop out of the story altogether). Price, who has been thought dead, lives under a new name with another underworld figure, Bonar Colleano. When the shooting victim dies, Bonar blackmails Price. Price visits his ex-wife who has remarried and blackmails her!

A good many complications ensue as the good wife tries to raise money, keep her husband out of the loop, and fend off the inquiries of the detective on the case who happens to know her. Furthermore, Price has two girl friends on the side. All this and more in a little over an hour.
