Monday, February 26 - The Informers

A lead detective tells his subordinates to stop using informants because he believes they should transition to more modern methods. But inspector Johnnoe does not intend to take a useful tool out of his toolbox just because he needs to add some additional tools. So he disobeys orders and continues using them, and one in particular - Jim Ruskin.

There have been a string of bank robberies going on in London, and Jim has a tip on who is involved. But the crooks see Jim watching them, and his drunk routine does not fool them. They take Jim prisoner and murder him, but not before he phones Johnnoe's house and leaves a message as to who is responsible for the robberies. So now as a result Johnnoe is hanging around and bothering the thieves and they have to do something to discredit him, because murdering an inspector will just get more heat on them.

As Johnnoe closes in on the villains, they frame him for corruption and he is arrested and held in prison. With few friends left on his side of the law, his wife enlists the help of the murdered man's brother.

Monday, February 19 - The Lady Is a Square

The Lady Is a Square (1959)

The story concerns an aspiring pop/rock 'n' roll singer who falls for an upper class beauty whose mother controls her life and definitely does not approve of rock 'n' roll. In fact, she's a benefactor of a celebrated classical pianist (pianist? Orchestra, you mean, surely). If she ever found out about her daughter liking a pop singer, she'd flip out.

The singer hangs out in a music store and auditions a new song, "Honey Bunny Baby" for his friend and agent. The agent gets him a recording deal and we see him in the studio recording the tune. Meanwhile the singer pretends to be a piano tuner so he can get into the house of the girl he fancies. He winds up being a butler for the evening and then stays on longer.

It turns out the mother has just gone bankrupt and her electricity is about to be turned off. The singer gets some money from his record label to pay to keep her lights on. She still doesn't approve of rock 'n' roll so he sings to her: "The Lady is a Square." In the end the old bag changes her tune! Hooray for rock 'n' roll.

Sunday, February 18 - Beautiful Stranger

Johnny Victor's in love with an international businessman, Louis Galt, who is actually the head of a syndicate which mints illegal coins for the Continental market. But she soon learns that Galt has been deceiving her, and has no intentions of divorcing his wife. So she meets Pierre Clemont, a potter, and falls for him (onscreen and off). Into this little slice of life comes Emil Landosh, a confidence man, and he steals a bracelet that Galt had given Victor and uses it to pay a debt. Enter a twist-of-fate, and it ends up in Galt's hands. Strained credibility aside since many, many films depend on beating the coincidental odds, Galt assumes that Landosh is Victor's lover, and this isn't a good assumption on his part since Landosh kills him and then makes it appear as if Victor and Clermont did the deed.

The Terrorists Original title: Ransom (1974)

A small group of terrorists have seized the British ambassador to the fictitious country of "Scandinavia", and are holding him hostage in his residence. Scandinavia's head of security, Col. Nils Tahlvik, wants to take an uncompromising position, but he is overruled by the governments of both Scandinavia and Britain, who insist that all of the terrorists' demands be met.

A passenger aeroplane arriving at the airport of Scandinavia's capital city is hijacked by another small group of terrorists, led by Ray Petrie. The aeroplane ends up parked on an isolated taxiway, and Petrie demands that he be put in touch with Martin Shepherd, leader of the group holding the British ambassador hostage. Petrie, who is known by Shepherd, convinces Shepherd that his group and his hostages should leave on the hijacked airplane, not on a military plane as originally planned.

Tahlvik and his group of military commandos make several attempts to thwart the terrorists' plans, but nothing seems to work out for them. At the last minute, Tahlvik figures out that the "terrorists" on the airplane are actually British secret operatives intent on capturing Martin Shepherd, and that the British officials have been misleading the Scandinavian authorities and undermining Tahlvik's efforts to capture the two terrorist groups. He boards the aeroplane alone just before it is to take off, precipitating a shootout between the two groups that leaves both Shepherd and Petrie dead.

Wednesday, January 31 - The Racing Strain

The Racing Strain (1932)

A race driver has a fatal accident on the track in front of his four year old son, Billy. The dying man's last wish is that his sidekick look after Billy and make him the best racer in the world. Ten year's later the two are driving across the desert on an unmade track(!?) in a beat up Flivver when the come across a large stranded limousine whose passengers are a beautiful young woman and her aunt. They tow the car to the nearest gas station, on the way picking up Togo, the Japanese chauffeur, sent ahead to get gas, but frightened up a tree by a passing bull (actually only a cow). The girl recognises the man as a former racer, King Kelly, disqualified for drunkenness. Having fallen for him, she gets her father, a wealthy gas and oil man, to get him back into racing, to the annoyance of her boyfriend, another racer. Meanwhile Billy is scared of racing, and everybody brands him as yellow. However, he likes flying and is very good at it, despite not having a licence (or insurance). A friendly barnstormer loans him his plane (possibly a Stearman, though I can't find one with the right combination of undercarriage and tailfin), as Billy is a natural, finding stunt flying safer than racing. At the Legion Ascot Raceway (now defunct as it killed too many people, but near Lincoln Hills, LA), the boyfriend makes rude remarks about Billy and a fight ensues. Togo saves Billy using ju-jitsu, and then teaches him some basic manoeuvres, and also how to shout Banzai!, which he says means Whoopee...

Whew! And there's more!
