Doris' brother Bill gets involved when Rizzo threatens to ruin the (questionable) good name of his sister, unless he helps the gang with some fixed bets.

When Jack confronts Bill about his suspicions, the two fight and Jack is seriously injured. Bill is consumed with guilt and tries to make good, but Jack has his own ideas about that.

The artist James "Jim" Vanning meets the model Marie Gardner in a bar, and they have dinner together. When they leave the restaurant, Marie gives her address, but the gangsters John and Red abduct Jim and send Marie home. They want information about a satchel with US$350,000, but Jim tells them that he does not know where it is. They torture Jim, but he escapes and drives to Marie's apartment. He tells her that she is in danger, and he explains that he was camping in the snow in Moose with his friend Dr. Edward Gurston when they saw a car driving off the road. They went to the spot to help the victims, but they are subdued by John and Red. Red shoots and kills the doctor. The criminals believe they are both dead, but Red mistakenly takes the doctor's bag leaving the money behind. When Jim awakes, he flees with the money bag but loses it in the snow. Now the criminals are hunting him while he is also wanted by the police. Meanwhile, the insurance investigator Ben Fraser is also on the track of Jim, but he is curious about his behavior - living a simple life without spending the stolen money.

In the middle of the night, private eye Philip Marlowe drives his friend Terry Lennox to the Mexican border. When Marlowe returns home police are waiting for him and he learns that Terry's wife Sylvia has been killed. He's arrested as an accessory but released after a few days and is told the case is closed since Terry Lennox has seemingly committed suicide in Mexico.

Marlowe is visited by mobster Marty Augustine who wants to know what happened to the $350,000 Lennox was supposed to deliver for him. Meanwhile, Marlowe is hired by Eileen Wade to find her husband Roger who has a habit of disappearing when he wants to dry out but she can't find him in any any of his usual haunts. He finds him at Dr. Veringer's clinic and brings him. It soon becomes obvious to Marlowe that Terry's death, the Wades and Augustine are all somehow interconnected. Figuring out just what those connections are however will be anything but easy.

When Nick's plane apparently crashes near the Channel Islands, there are many nagging questions about the circumstances. Although he is innocent himself of wrongdoing, Van Ness is pressured by the police to aid them in uncovering some of the criminal activities associated with the operation, including blackmail, smuggling gold, and counterfeiting. In order to obtain the information he needs, Van Ness is forced into romancing Boyd's grasping girlfriend, who finds herself very attracted to the flier.

Since the charter has never been rescinded, the London district of Pimlico is now legally the long-lost Duchy of Burgundy, and therefore no longer subject to British law, including postwar rationing and pub closure hours.
