Thursday, March 30 - Girls on the Loose

Girls on the Loose (1958)

A gang robs a payroll and during the robbery, a guard is seriously injured. It's no surprise when the gang turns out to be all women, lead by glamorous nightclub owner Mara Corday. She involves her sister (Barbara Bostock) in the robbery by having her drive the getaway car while not telling her what they are all up to. Once the sister finds out, it is too late for her. 

The other gang members have different reactions to their committing of the crime. Riddled with guilt, the religious Abby Dalton appears to be on the verge of a nervous breakdown and a threat to keeping her mouth shut. Another one (Joyce Barker) takes pleasure in the fact that as the group gets smaller, her intake of the payroll money gets larger. Finally, French girl Lita Milan seems to be intent on spending her money getting drunk. 

Corday is not happy when her sister begins spending time with a police investigator (Peter Mark Richman) and does all she can to thwart the romance...

Enter cutie Judy Garland, the niece of Rooney's landlady. She befriends Sinclair and gets Rooney to agree to ride his horse. Things are complicated when Mickey's crooked dad asks him to throw the race.

Saturday, March 25 - Juke Box Rhythm

Juke Box Rhythm (1959)

Lighthearted musical about a beautiful princess who arrives in New York City to pick her coronation wardrobe under the thumb and serious guidance of her aunt, the Countess, who doesn't approve of NYC or that "immoral music" the princess seems to like.

Well, first night in town our princess sneaks out of her room and into the "Spring Hop" fraternity dance being held in her hotel where she meets handsome, singing Riff Manton (Jack Jones), a real ringer for a young Ricky Nelson. Soon it's agreed that Riff can take her to a classical concert - instead he sneaks her to the "Bop Inn" where the kids are swinging and George Jessel appears in person to sing and do comedy patter with the audience.

And meanwhile - Riff is busy with a plan to try and get the princess to buy her wardrobe from a struggling fashion designer who has offered Riff the money in exchange for the recognition - which Riff plans to invest in his theatrical producer dad's upcoming new show "Juke Box Jamboree".

After the gangster wins control of the club, Cristakos, the previous owner, begins to perform comic routines between the acts at the night club as part of his (Cristakos) plan to win Natalie back. Eventually, the gangster and the singer marry, which causes the previous owner to leave alone.

When the story begins, Donald Avery (Alan Mowbray) is on vaction...but folks keep pestering him because he's a famous Broadway producer. In particular, Helen Middleton (Barbara Read) has the nerve to try to get him to read her play...even though she's never written or published anything before. He essentially blows her off...telling her to submit the play to his secretary.

The trip is suddenly canceled when Avery's producer, Jeff Crandall (Donald McBride) calls him in a panic...their leading lady, Charlotte Morley (Helen Vincent) is talking about walking as soon as her contract is over...and she only owes them one more play. So, Jeff tries to pull a fast one...and looks for the worst play he can find...and it turns out to be Helen's. His notion is to tell Charlotte she'll have to star in this god-awful play....and teach her a lesson in humility. There's a problem with his plan...Charlotte loves the play and insists they do it!

During the production of his latest project, which stars one of his former flames Constance Cummings, he receives several letters from a person he doesn't know, claiming they had an affair. Initially thinking it's an attempt at blackmail, he shrugs it off. But when his wife also receives a letter, they decide enough is enough, and they visit the woman, Mary Murphy. 

When she persists in her story, even in front of the police, Basehart starts to have doubts. Could he really have forgotten?! Soon things start to fall apart for him, as Murphy's story, fabricated or not, starts to threaten his marriage as well as his career.

After the raid at the dock, Tracy's team finds a clue that the Spider is interested in Death Valley Johnny, a prospector with a hidden gold mine. Gordon steals the location of the mine and shoots Johnny, and Tracy uses detective work to find the mine and the ghost town nearby where he and Steve Lockwood engage the Spiders men. Tracy falls down a mine shaft during the fracas and is sitting duck for the Spider's men.

Episode 8: Battle in the Clouds

Saved by Steve Lockwood and Mike McGurk and foiling the Spider's ghost town plot, Tracy meet Betty Clayton who is a test pilot on a top secret speed plane her father H.D. developed. Dick takes a test ride and stops a hijack attempt of the plane by one of the Spiders minions. When H.D. is kidnapped by Gordon Tracy (wanting the planes for he plane???), Dick rescues the scientist and they escape in the speed plane until Gordon and his flying wing shoot the escaping duo down.

Unfortunately, she has an even rarer blood type. There are only three people in Britain who have the same blood type. One is Freddie Mills, a has-been boxer who disappeared after his manager, Sid James, told him to take a dive. The second is Earl Cameron (still alive in his 102nd year as I write this), a seaman who refuses to give his blood. The third is Geoffrey Hibbert, wanted for murder and in hiding. Jack Warner is the Scotland Yard inspector leading the search. He says it's a nice change from his usual murder beat.

Con man Roger Kingsley convinces the Los Angeles police that, acting as an insurance company's investigator, he can help them apprehend a notorious swindler, a woman named Mary Webb.

Kingsley sets a trap at a department store and nabs Webb as she steals a mink coat. But while the store detective is contacting police, Webb, who is actually Kingsley's girlfriend, is permitted to escape. However, Kingsley has gained the trust of the police.

In a second scam, Webb and Kingsley bilk a pawnshop owner out of several thousand dollars. She then prepares for their biggest con yet, a stage act at Johnny Gregg's nightclub in which Webb will pose as a clairvoyant. Her psychic powers amaze Gregg's customers, but the act is just an elaborate ruse.

The suspicious police set a trap. A dentist named Braddock is implicated in a murder, but while trying to save the life of whom she believes to be an innocent man, Webb is tricked into confessing her scam in front of the club's entire audience. She and Kingsley are taken to jail.

The police investigation finds it a murder, and Slater finds himself right in the hapless thick of it, along with strong woman Joan Rhodes (in her movie debut) and stage psychic Garry Marsh, along with an investigation into drug trafficking.

Sunday, March 5 - The Town Went Wild

Like Romeo and Juliet, next door neighbours David Conway and Carol Harrison are deeply in love with each other though their fathers have been feuding for a lifetime. With David due to go to the Alaskan Territory for engineering work for the United States Government, the pair decide to elope. David gets his best friend, Carol's brother Bob to witness their wedding at a Justice of the Peace in a neighbouring town using Millie, who has an infatuation with Bob to drive them to the town in her car and act as another witness.

Arriving at the Justice of the Peace, their wedding has to be delayed as state law requires the couple to post banns of marriage in the local newspaper for three days prior to the wedding. Returning to their own town, David prepares the banns to be published as soon as possible and goes to the local town hall to obtain his birth certificate for his government posting. The clerks discover that due to the fathers of Bob and David fighting when the children were born, the two infants were mixed at the hospital with David being a Harrison and Bob being a Conway. Not only is Carol set to marry her brother, but the intention to do so faces a fifteen year prison sentence.

Before they can, a boarder at the rooming house where Michaels is staying that she had enticed then jilted, (Percy Helton), discovers her plans and attempts blackmail.

Although Matt often doubts his dangerous task, he remains undercover to bring the Communists to justice and protect a faltering member (Dorothy Hart) from her vindictive party.

Jones wants him to devise a perfect murder and isn't above killing others sloppily along the way to get his foolproof murder plot.
