She refuses, and the couple splits. Soon, the flirtatious Claudia (Binnie Barnes) starts going for David. But Mother Nature intervenes.

Barbara Stanwyck plays a woman equestrian who meets and falls in love with a traveling polo player from a once wealthy family. After they are married, she is persuaded by a friend to help entertain a client aboard a yacht. The client's drunk girlfriend accidentally drowns, and the friend is arrested for her murder. Determined to keep her name out of the press, the friend does not reveal that he has a witness who can prove his innocence.

After the death of his ailing mother, Martin Lynn (Farley Granger) feels desperately alone. His only concern is that his mother receive an elegant burial. Unfortunately, Martin is also in a dire financial situation and cannot afford an expensive church service. Enraged, Martin viciously directs his frustrations at a clergyman, killing him. The impulsive act leaves Martin in an even more despondent state, though a kindly priest (Dana Andrews) may be able to guide the young man toward redemption.

A Hollywood stunt man is hired to impersonate a young woman's brother in order to fool her wealthy--and wildly eccentric (the family isn't so eccentric, he is)--family, but problems arise when the would-be sibling falls for his "sister" in this screwball romp.

If he wins, he gets $15,000 to produce the play; if he loses, he must accept a job in his uncle's meat packing plant.

After a military officer gets Ann Vickers pregnant and leaves her, her baby dies (in Havana, hint, hint). Feeling stunned, Ann devotes herself to further social work, taking a job in a women's prison. However, when she tries to improve the conditions there, she incurs the wrath of the sheriff and warden and loses her job. She writes a book about the harsh realities of the prison and begins a romance with a married judge, Barney Dolphin (Walter Huston), while running a womens' prison. She has a child out of wedlock and is forced out her job, while Barney goes to prison.

Or something like that. And it's all crammed into 73 minutes!

Playboy Larry Blendon (Damian O'Flynn) introduces his grandmother Stella Blendon (Clara Blandick) to his fiancée, radio singer Virginia Berneaux (Ramsay Ames). Despite Larry's record of broken romances and divorces, Virginia decides she will marry him. Virginia is slain that night and Blandon telephones his friend Philo Vance (William Wright) to help find the killer. Even as they talk, the killer strikes again and Philo hears Larry fall dead. Philo begins his investigation with Alexis Karnoff (leon Belasco'), Virginia's manager, and the two go to Larry's home, where Stella tells them that the motive for the killing might be Larry's will that names the six women in his life as heirs and if any die before the will is probated, the others will divide the shares. They also learn that Katherine Corbett(Phyllis Planchard), the first of Larry's wives, has been murdered. Suspicion now falls on Lorena Sims (Vivian Austin), a former wife... and so on.

Geoffrey Carter, a highly strung author suffering from writer's block, petulantly insists to his wife that they flee their annoying neighbours and move somewhere more peaceful. They find a delightfully remote woodland cottage which the owner a melancholic, widowed artist with a Larry Adler fixation is happy to rent them at a pittance. All too soon they realise that something is not quite right with their landlord and, much to Geoffrey's horror, he realises that the plot of his new murder mystery is being played out for real.

Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson are spending a restful day in the country, when they encounter a badly injured man who is carrying an unconscious young woman. They take the pair back to their flat in London, and after Dr. Watson has treated them, the man explains what has happened to them. He is Haterley, a hydraulic engineer with a business of his own. He had been hired by Colonel Stark and an associate, who wanted him to fix a large hydraulic press for them. He was taken to the colonel's country home, where their mute housekeeper tried frantically to warn him about Stark. After a tumultuous encounter, he and the housekeeper had barely escaped with their lives. From other details, Holmes deduces that Stark was involved in counterfeiting. Holmes, Watson, and Inspector Lestrade then set out to finish the case.

Desperate to leave behind the poverty of her home life, pretty Jessie Cassidy (Joan Crawford) pushes her boyfriend, Eddie (Alan Curtis), to marry her. Eddie then convinces Jessie to work as a showgirl to support them until he can find work. Oblivious to Eddie's shiftless nature, Jessie complies. Months later, at a party thrown for the show by shipping tycoon John Hennessy (Spencer Tracy), the still-unemployed Eddie notes John's attraction to Jessie and makes a shocking proposal to his wife.

Eddie plots to have Jessie divorce him, marry Hennessey, divorce Hennessey, then bring Hennessey's money into remarriage with Eddie.

But love wins out.

The waitress's baby becomes the star. The cowboy and his agent run off with the waitress and her valuable asset. The writers retaliate by hiring an unemployed extra to impersonate the baby's father. But the extra already knows the waitress.

Hank Smith, a brutish stoker on board a freighter, is appalled when Mildred Douglas, a society girl forced by circumstance to travel as a passenger, visits the stokehold and recoils at the filthy, sweating Hank. A powerhouse of a man with a primitive confidence, Hank has never been looked down on before nor suffered the insult "hairy ape" flung at him by the rich girl. At first he seeks vengeance for the insult, but broods over it until more than anything, he desires to understand it. When the ship reaches port, he seeks her out in her upper class surroundings, determined to grasp the meaning of the encounter.

Thursday, March 31 - Make Mine Laughs

Make Mine Laughs (1949)

Make Mine Laughs was the second of three RKO Radio "pastiche" films, composed largely of musical and comedy highlights from previous RKO productions. Comedian Gil Lamb hosts the proceedings, finding time to make satirical comments about the opening credits and to perform his "swallowing the harmonica" specialty. The filmclips include two short subjects, Leon Errol's Beware of Redheads and one of RKO's Flicker Flashbacks entries, both presented in their entirety. Also featured are Frances Langford singing "Moonlight Over the Islands" (from Bamboo Blonde), Anne Shirley and Dennis Day duetting on "If You Happen to Find a Heart" (from Music in Manhattan), and specialties performed by the likes of orchestra leaders Frankie Carle and Freddie "Schnickelfritz" Fisher, ventriloquist Robert Lamouret, and dance teams Manuel & Marita Viera and Rosario & Antonio. Make Mine Laughs was withdrawn from distribution after Ray Bolger and Jack Haley brought suit against RKO for unauthorized use of clips from Bolger's boxing pantomime in Four Jacks and Jill (1944) and Haley's "Who Killed Vaudeville?" number from George White's Scandals (1945).
