Humble stamp dealer Otto Becker (Conrad Veidt) has little to do with international politics, so when he receives a surprise visit from his estranged twin brother and Nazi spy, Baron Hugo von Detner (Conrad Veidt), his world is thrown into turmoil. Threatening Becker with deportation, Hugo forces him to use his shop as a front for espionage. But when Becker's friend Professor Sterling (Ivan Simpson) turns up dead, Becker accidentally shoots his brother and assumes his identity.

Marlin is also in jail and Ed tries to ingratiate himself with the mob boss, who comes to like him. Ed witnesses the murder of a guard which Marlin was responsible for and still refuses to talk, leading to serious complications and an unexpected kidnapping ... Marlin intends to see that Novak keeps his mouth shut permanently.

Gertrude Morel, miserable in her marriage, puts her hope into her son, Paul. In seeking to maintain her involvement in and influence over Paul's life, she jealously attempts to prevent Paul from having a relationship with the girl he is seeing, Miriam. Miriam too suffers from a maternal influence - her mother has imbued in her a distaste for sex. Paul drops Miriam but becomes enchanted with self-actualized and "liberated" feminist co-worker, Mrs. Clara Dawes, who is married, though separated. Paul and Clara become involved sexually and Clara realizes that Paul's emotional attachment, as with her own, lies with another person — in Paul's case, his mother.

Gertrude learns of Paul's involvement with Clara, and slips into a morose depression and, later, serious physical sickness. Clara rejects Paul for his lack of emotional connection to her and her continuing feelings for her husband. Paul flees to his terminally ill mother, to care for her and sit by her side. After his mother's death, Paul meets again the girlfriend of his youth, Miriam, and rejects her proposal of marriage, telling her that he intends to live the rest of his life without any serious relationship with another woman.

Jim Matthews (Jack Hedley) is a lowly clerk working for an insurance company. The work is mind-numbingly boring but there is hope. He has applied for a transfer to the Claims department which would mean much more interesting work and getting out from a desk. Much to his surprise his transfer is approved.

It’s a pretty routine case. A jockey named Wally Sanders was badly injured in a car crash and won’t be able to ride again. Wally had demonstrated admirable foresight in taking out an insurance policy which covered him for such eventualities. The insurance company is however not entirely happy about the claim, partly because Sanders had been involved in an incident on the racetrack which suggested he might have deliberately caused his horse, the odds on favourite, to lose. There is no proof but the stewards were just a little doubtful about his explanation. Investigating the claim will be the first assignment for Jim Matthews in his new position.

He throws himself into the case with energy and enthusiasm, although perhaps not with terribly good judgment. He discovers a few things that suggest that Wally Sanders was definitely mixed up in something crooked. In fact Jim discovers enough to earn himself a beating by a couple of hoodlums who warn him to stop nosing around. Jim is an easy-going affable sort of chap but he’s very stubborn and he’s determined to keep digging.

It seems highly likely that Ben Black (Patrick Magee) is involved in some way. Black runs a number of legitimate businesses and others that are not so legitimate.

There’s also (naturally) a pretty young woman mixed up in the affair, which may be a partial explanation for Jim’s keen interest in the case. Marion Parker (Jacqueline Ellis) is the sister of jockey Clive Parker (Larry Martyn) and he’s been hanging around with a rather unsavoury crowd lately.

You Can't Beat the Law (1943) - Re-titled 'Prison Mutiny'

Playboy Johnny Gray is framed and sent to prison after his stolen car is found at a holdup committed by Rico, and while the latter is not suspected (actually, the bandits carjack Johnny, Rico bails out and the cops pull the car over, arresting Johnny and the other 3 bandits), his henchmen Harry, Creeper and Red are convicted with Johnny. Stung by the injustice, when even his fiancée believes him guilty, Johnny becomes an unruly prisoner and is put in a cell with Cain, head of the prison gang planning a break. The new warden, Frank Sanders, wins Johnny over by changing his cell mate and giving him a chance to work in the prison gardens. Here, he meets Amy Duncan, daughter of prison guard Duncan. In an failed escaped, engineered from the outside by Rico, who is killed, one of Rico's men confesses that Johnny is innocent.

Wednesday, April 22 - Night in New Orleans

Foster and Dekker are both Lieutenants in the New Orleans Police Department. They are both in competition for one opening as a Police Captain.

Foster is married to Patricia Morrison. Foster is out one fog filled night trying to retrieve some letters Morrison had written a former paramour. The letters could be taken wrong if they hit the papers etc. The problem for Foster is that he finds the man who has the letters, dead, with several large bullet holes in him. Foster rifles the man's desk and grabs up the letters, then beats the feet home.

Needless to say there are several witnesses who see him leave the house and street. When the body is found, Lt Dekker gets the call. He soon discovers that Foster was seen in the area at the time of death. Bingo, he has a suspect, Policeman or not.

The rest of the 75 minute runtime is spent chasing down the clues that pop up one after the other. First, Foster is the lead suspect, then, both the dead man's brothers top the list, then, it is the dead man's bodyguard followed by a singer at a hot New Orleans night spot. This one hops all over the place before disclosing the real killer in the last two minutes.

George meets rich girl Rosalind Russell on the ship coming from Europe. It’s love at first sight for him and he is spurred on to going from being a ditch digger to a powerful New York politician in the shake of an eye! (He meets the mayor who offers him a job.)

The very next scene is 4 years later and he’s the usual well dressed,suave Raft! ( with no attempt at an explanation of his success).

Rosalind is married to an unscrupulous banker whom Raft saves from prison...

Monday, April 20 - Spring Madness

In their last semester at Harvard, Sam Thatcher and his roommate, who is nicknamed "The Lippencott", have grand ideas of seeing the remote corners of the world, they having booked passage on a freighter from New York to Siberia, the trip immediately after they graduate. They plan to live and observe the economic life there for two years before they settle down. They've had such plans since they were freshmen, not wanting to be tied down to the American rat race immediately following graduation. Sam, however, has not mentioned any of these plans to his girlfriend, Alex Benson, also a student in her final semester at the New England College for Women.

Alex wants Sam to attend the college's spring dance with her to be able to show him off to the other girls, the dance a rite of passage to a serious commitment. Sam doesn't want to lead Alex on by attending but also doesn't want to miss one last opportunity to see her. His plan to graduate and attend the dance hits a snag when the sailing is moved up by two weeks, it now at the end of the weekend of the dance. Lipp, who has a mole in a mutual friend named Hat who goes to the college every weekend to visit with his girl, Frances, a friend of Alex's, doesn't trust Sam, who he feels may leave him in the lurch by not going on the trip to Siberia. Knowing that Sam, against his word, will be going to the college to see Alex anyway, Lipp decides to ambush him at the college to make sure he says his goodbyes and heads to New York for the sailing. The weekend thus becomes a race between Alex's friends, who, without Alex's knowledge, do whatever they can to ensure Sam doesn't want to make that ship, and Lipp who knows there's something afoot behind all those feminine curls. Added to the fray is the fact that the dance is being attended by boys from all the Ivy League schools, who have a friendly or not so friendly rivalry with Harvard.

Told in flashback, the film recounts how gambler Harry Lane (Castle) ended up accused of murder: Returned from the war he took up his old job working for bookmaker Marty Floyd (Keane). Dispatched by his boss to deliver $20,000 to a contact in Las Vegas, he foolishly loses some of the money at the gambling tables, then loses the rest of it to a conman (Gaines). His attempts to recover the money result in him accidentally killing the conman. In the end Lane is cleared when it is revealed that the victim was no victim after all.

Don Castle gets out of prison and goes back to work for boss gambler Edward Keane. He's sent to Las Vegas to pay off a high roller, but gets taken by a con man, kills the con man, imitates the con man and hooks up with the con man's widow, Virginia Christine.

Natasha Romanova (Daliah Lavi) on the case. She makes mild mannered Stanley Farquhar (Lionel Jeffries) biggest dream come true: a naked lady waiting when he enters his hotel room. For reasons impossible to dispose here (it could trigger international chaos), the chip must be removed again and only Trevelyan (third best dressed man in the whole world three years running), can do it.

Maurice Giraud (Herbert) is sent to New York to arrange for the Academy Ballet of America to come to Paris to compete for cash prizes at an international dance festival, but a cabbie takes him by mistake to the Club Ballé, a nightclub about to go under. The desperate owners of the club, Terry Moore (Vallee) and Duke Dennis (Jenkins), know that an error has occurred, but see the invitation as a way out of their financial problems. To get some ballet into their nightclub act, they hire ballet teacher Luis Leoni (Fritz Feld) and his star (and only) pupil Kay Morrow (Rosemary Lane) to teach their girls ballet on the boat crossing the Atlantic. Terry finds Kay very attractive, but things are complicated when his ex-wife, Mona (Gloria Dickson), invites herself along, rooming with Kay.

Meanwhile, the head of the real ballet company, Padrinsky (Curt Bois), finds out what has happened and cables Giraud aboard ship, then heads to Paris with his patron, a ballet-loving gangster named Mike Coogan (Edward Brophy), who intends to rub out Terry and Duke. Giraud is upset about being hoaxed, but is mollified when a "talking dog" (a ventriloquist hired by Terry and Duke) convinces him that Padrinsky is the liar.

After they arrive in Paris, a representative of the exposition, Pierre Le Brec (Melville Cooper), wants to watch the group's rehearsals, and Duke tells his new friend Coogan, the gangster, that Le Brec is causing him trouble. Coogan goes to "take care" of the problem, but by mistake knocks out Leoni instead of Le Brec. Padrinsky shows up and arranges for the imposters to be deported on the day of the contest, but Mona manages to change the order so that Coogan and Padrinsky are shipped out, instead, which allows the company to perform and win the grand prize.

Frank Carmichael, the interim prison warden with a crippled wife at home, is kidnapped by convicts during a breakout. A prison guard (a motorcycle cop, actually) is killed and ex-con Johnny Hutchins – innocently arriving at the meet-up location in hopes that the garage owner (the guy doesn't actually own the garage, it's all speculation) would help finance his business -- is forced to go along with the escapees.

The get-away car speeds into a ditch with Johnny at the wheel killing all but one prisoner, the warden and innocent Johnny. The warden shoots the remaining prisoner as he runs from the crash spilling $100,000 in stolen bills over the hillside. The warden scoops up the cash and buries it to pick up later. Johnny comes to just in time for the police to arrest him. Days later, Carmichael allows Johnny take the blame for the guards death – because proving him innocent would prove his own guilt. Carmichael – who was just about to be fired prior to the breakout – now gets made permanent warden because of his celebrity status after the escape. Johnny is not so lucky. He’s sentenced to be executed but escapes...

Beatnik pianist Kicks Johnson (Nehemiah Persoff) tells us a cautionary tale from the previous year when he was part of the extended rootless network of broken- down ex-football star Tom Kupfen (Anthony Quinn) – the "wild party" of the title who was in desperate need of quick cash – as well as the easily influenced wayward middle-class teen Honey (Kathryn Grant) and suited-up sneering cowardly knife-man Gage (Jay Robinson), who learnt to pass for respectable by hanging out where else but at the movies.

One night, Gage persuaded society beauty Erica (Carol Ohmart) and her somewhat reluctant military fiancé Lt. Arthur Mitchell (Arthur Franz) to leave their swanky hotel bar for some "safe excitement" watching jazz pianist Kicks in a downtown cellar bar. Here, the slobbish Tom made the first of a series of brutish plays for Erica (who may not have initially been that reluctant to receive the attention) before a plan took hold to kidnap the upscale "square" couple and extort cash from one of Arthur's connections.

As a low-level classified ad salesman, Eddie Albert dreams of sailing the high seas in search of adventure with his friend or landlord or relative (not quite sure what he is,) the Skipper played by Alan Hale. He's in love with Joan Leslie as Mary, a wide-eyed, too-good-to-be-true coworker but she'll have to wait til he gets the travel bug out of his system. Meanwhile, Mary is ticked off that his brilliant promotional ideas to perk up the paper's circulation are being swiped by his alcoholic boss. Oh, there's also Dickie Moore as a crippled newsboy...

Kay Francis plays Claire, who on her wedding day to Martin (Forbes) runs off instead with Bill Landin (O'Brien). They start off well enough, but then Claire's dad (Hall) runs off, cleaning out the bank account of his advertising agency, where Bill and Martin work. Bill gives the other officers his stock in exchange for Claire not finding out about her dad and continues to work for the company. Unfortunately, now he's in the hands of the penny-pinching Martin, and they slowly start to lose clients. Bill has one more chance, Bel-Ami Cosmetics, but after drawing up the proposals, he trashes them since he knows Martin won't pay for a splashy presentation. Claire resurrects the drawings and sells the campaign to Bon Ami. Her husband promptly dumps her.

Claire carries on with the firm...

When wealthy American expatriate Cornelia Wheelwright (Robson) is informed by her longtime lawyers that her late father swindled his partner, Fortune McCallister, out of $700,000, she acts decisively. First, because James Amory is the only lawyer in the firm to be outraged by the injustice, she hires him and fires the rest of the firm. His first task is to locate all of McCallister's heirs. It turns out there is only one: granddaughter Pam McCallister (Lane).

Pam works in Lacey's Department Store and lives in a boardinghouse in New York City. To find out what kind of person she is, Cornelia becomes a fellow tenant. Cornelia also meets Pam's boyfriend, composer and piano player Pete Rowan (Reagan).

Cornelia then has Jim give Pam a million dollars. Pam is excited at first, buying gifts for her boardinghouse friends, and her boyfriend, who lives across the hall from her. Much to her surprise, her friends and boyfriend seem to change overnight. They are not as overjoyed at her good fortune as she imagines they would be, and rather resent her. As the last straw, her boyfriend tells her she's an Elsie Dinsmore and breaks it off with her. Pam finally decides on a course of action that makes her happy, as well as those around her.

Evelyn Walsh Warren is named Teacher of the Year and her photo is on the cover of Time magazine, but she is dissatisfied with her uneventful life. That changes when she goes to Reno and inadvertently loses $7000 at the roulette table, mistaking $100 chips for $1 ones. Casino owner Matt Braddock offers her a deal: He will tear up her IOU if she finds out what is wrong with his nine-year-old daughter Diane, who is moping around, not eating and having nightmares. When Evelyn refuses, he suggests they cut cards for the debt. She gets a king, but he tops her with an ace (by cheating). Defeated, she accompanies him to his home in Carmel, California.

Frustrated at her predicament, Evelyn is initially cold to Diane, but after overhearing the child's telephone conversation with her father, Evelyn becomes ashamed of herself and quickly becomes fast friends with her young charge. Soon, Diane is happy, much to Matt's delight. In fact, she is so taken with her new private teacher that she begins maneuvering to set Evelyn up with her father.

Diane becomes frustrated when Kay Stoddard, Matt's old flame, shows up. Undaunted, the young girl manages to steer Kay into some poison oak to get her out of the way. Evelyn is hostile to Matt at first, but gradually warms to him. When they go out fishing on a boat, she secretly disables the motor to spend more time with him. Matt, however, flags down a commercial fishing boat owned by Manuel to take them aboard. Evelyn gets drunk on a seasickness remedy and admits to Matt that she has fallen for him; they become engaged.

Matt sells his casino so his future wife will not be ashamed of him, but he gets a shock when Evelyn tells him that it was all an act. She goes home.

There, she receives a telephone call from Marie, Matt's housekeeper. Diane has run away. Frantic, Evelyn flies to Carmel, where she and Matt blame each other. However, it turns out that Diane (with Marie's encouragement) was just hiding. The little girl gets the two to realize they really do love each other.

Meek, aging, hypochondriac stage producer J.J. Hobart (Victor Moore), who always thinks he is about to die, is going to mount a new show, but his partners Morty Wethered (Osgood Perkins) and Tom Hugo (Charles D. Brown) lost the money for the show in the stock market. On the advice of chorus girl Genevieve Larkin (Glenda Farrell), they insure J.J. for a million dollars, so that when he dies, they will have the money they need to produce the show. Genevieve's friend, ex-chorus girl Norma Perry (Joan Blondell) is sweet on insurance salesman Rosmer "Rossi" Peek (Dick Powell), and he writes the policy.

When Rosmer's boss, Andy Callahan (William B. Davidson) finds out how old J.J. is, he is afraid he wil not pass the physical, but when Hobart does, Rosmer decides he has to keep J.J. alive as long as possible, to reap the rewards of his sale. On the other hand, Morty and Hugo have everything to gain if J.J. dies, and they try to help things along. When that fails, they talk Genevieve into seducing J.J., but she ends up falling in love with him instead. Rosmer finds out the reason for the insurance policy, and talks his boss, Callahan, into investing in J.J.'s show, to save the company the money it would have to pay if J.J. dropped dead after learning he was broke and could not put on the show. When the show is a success Genevieve and J.J. get married, and so do Norma and Rosmer.

Millie sets her eyes on Doug Andrews, but he quickly informs her he is a confirmed bachelor. However, Doug is willing to help Millie find a husband. Doug's lessons in the art of allurement soon catch the eye of playboy neighbor Phil Gowan.

Ginger Rogers plays Glory Eden, radio's Purity Girl, representing Ippsie Wipsie Washcloths. As the Purity Girl, Glory can't be anything but pure. Glory finds this annoying. All she's interested in is drinking, smoking, going to Harlem, wearing sexy clothes, and, if one reads between the lines, losing her virginity.

Her handlers decide to fix her up with a pure Anglo-Saxon, found in the Kentucky Mountains. They choose a nice-looking fan (Norman Foster) and set the two up, even having a wedding on the air. Knowing of her discontent, Kelsey Dish Rags is after her, too, and know she hasn't re-signed with Ippsie yet. The two engage in battle, and find there's a third party involved - Glory's new hubby, who takes Glory at her word about wanting to live in a Kentucky cabin and have a cow.

Maverick private eyes Kildane and Quayle leave a large agency to work on their own. Their first assignment (pirated from the old firm): retrieve eloping heiress Penelope Hampton...in competition with their former boss Prentiss. Kildane finds Penelope with surprising ease and keeps her one jump ahead of Prentiss with assorted difficulties, but can he avoid a romantic complication with his lovely charge?

The Continental Detective Agency’s star investigator, Eddie Kildane (Rod Cameron), has had enough of his dictatorial chief, Prentiss (Broderick Crawford), so he and partner, Wally Quayle (Frank McHugh) quit (Wally was fired) and establish their own business. Clients are hard to come by when you’re starting out, though, so they steal one from their old boss. The assignment: find and return, unmarried, the client’s run-away daughter.

Crawford is constantly on Cameron’s trail, one step behind here, one step ahead there. This is while Cameron has his hands full with Raines’s attempts to elude him.

However, psychiatrist Caroline Canford (Nancy Davis) is convinced she can cure the young girl and begins to suspect that another person is guilty.

That person is Dell Faring (Ann Sothern), who became incensed after brother-in-law David discovered that while he was away on a business trip, wife Celia (Kristine Miller) was having an affair with Dell's fiance, Crane Weymouth. A resentment already existed between the sisters because Dell felt this was not the first time Celia had selfishly taken something from her. Celia knocked David unconscious during a quarrel over her infidelity. Dell then arrived, picked up a gun David brought home from his trip and killed her sister with it. With no memory of what happened, David can only assume he was the one who shot Celia, so he accepts the jury's verdict and the judge's sentence that he be put to death.

Susan, who saw the murder from the door but repressed the memory, is haunted by the image of a shadow on the wall. A distraught Dell, realizing that Dr. Canford is trying to restore the girl's memory, attempts to murder the child. When she fails, she adopts Susan instead. Dell casts a shadow on the wall that triggers Susan's memory.

Jive Junction (1943)

A young, classical-trained musician, Peter Crane, transfers from the Conservatory to Clinton High School, where he finds his music in conflict to that of the high school's world of jive and Hep Cats. Claire falls for Peter, who is warned to stay away from her by Grant Saunders. Later, for fear of hurting his hands, Peter backs down from a fight with Saunders and is deemed a coward by Claire and his classmates. He also goes home that day to find that his father has been killed in action overseas. He turns to jive and is soon leading the school band, which is entered in a national contest. On the night of the finals competition, the band, through an accident, find they have no instruments. Peter rushes to his old professor at the Conservatory, who lends him the instruments from a Symphony Orchestra he conducts.
