Longfellow Deeds lives in a small town and leads a small-town kind of life, including playing the tuba in the town band. When a relative dies and leaves Deeds a fortune, Longfellow picks up his tuba and moves to the big city, where he becomes an instant target for everyone from the greedy opera committee to the sensationalist daily newspaper. Deeds outwits them all until Babe Bennett comes along. Babe is a hot-shot reporter who figures that the best way to get close to Deeds is to pose as a damsel in distress. When small-town boy meets big-city girl, anything can, and does, happen.

Reporter Larry Doyle (Frank Albertson) is on top of the world when he exposes the crimes of organized crime boss Louis Pedroni (Max Hoffman Jr.). His success, however, is spoiled in one fell swoop: He's fired from his job, kidnapped by Pedroni's thugs, knocked out and thrown on a train. Eventually, he wakes up in St. Louis, where he meets the lovely Ann (Joan Woodbury).

He then has to pawn his engraved revolver with a fence in league with the gangsters also part of Pardoni's mob. The gang gets the revolver from the fence and plant it at their next job, but Larry is on their trail and captures them at the pawn shop.

Reporter Larry Doyle from Chicago gets $50 for breaking an important story and does too much celebrating. He ends up broke in St. Louis. He sits down at a lunch counter with beautiful Anne Oglivie (Maxine Doyle). She finds that she only has 10 cents to pay for her 20 cent coffee and donut. Larry secretly pays for her. Realizing that a young girl broke in the city could end up in trouble, Larry follows her around to help her out. Having no place to stay, he gets a hotel room for the two of them. Anne is reluctant, but Larry reassures her that he's a square kind of guy. He orders an expensive $35 a day hotel suite which has two bedrooms with separate keys.

Larry then goes after a slippery gangster called "the Eel."

Dr. Sayer, the director of a philanthropic foundation, spends his weekends at his luxurious villa outside of Rome toying with sadistic fantasies. His games are usually acted out with the help of a prostitute conversant with his desires. When his regular prostitute becomes unavailable at the last minute, Sayer substitutes Maria, a young journalist on his staff. After the drugged Maria regains consciousness at his villa, Sayer realizes that he now has a real victim on his hands. She is subjected to his unpleasant games but soon begins subverting him.

Episode 9 - The Stratosphere Adventure

Dick Tracy parachutes to safety from his shot-down plane and sneaks aboard the Flying Wing as a helmeted aviator when it lands to pick up the speed plane engine parts. He moves with the engine parts to a foreign agent's zeppelin and takes control of it, returning it to America but before he can arrive the dirigible is shot down by a unknowning Steve Lockwood.

Episode 10 - The Gold Ship

Escaping a crashing zeppelin, Tracy has foiled the Spider's speed plane plot and moves on to the next, investigating missing gold aboard the oceanic steamer, the Atlantis. The Spider's men are on board the vessel and Tracy battles the foreman Clancy, the two falling dockside when a hull plate falls from far above towards Dick.

Hideout (1949)

A couple of thieves, Beecham and Evans, rob a Chicago socialite's diamond necklace. They give it to the man they're working for, Arthur Burdette, who promptly double-crosses them. A diamond expert who examines the necklace is then found dead (later, in Iowa).

Burdette slips away to a small Iowa town under an assumed name. When he hears city attorney George Browning has fired secretary Hannah Kelly, he offers Hannah a job (he pretends to offer her a job - she's already working for him). Browning has no idea that Burdette and Hannah are actually accomplices in crime, and pays no heed when new secretary Edie Hanson suggests that possibility.

Betrayed crooks Beecham and Evans show up, looking for Burdette and the necklace. Browning doesn't realize how involved Hannah is until she shoots the two thieves and ends up having the stolen necklace on her. Edie helps him get the better of Hannah and Burdette, also making Browning realize he's falling for the new girl.

A group of criminals rob a warehouse where they cosh the elderly night watchman. The watchman's ex-G.I. son Frank finds his barely conscious father who soon dies from the injury; his last words being that the group drove a white T-Bird. Frank tracks the gang down with the idea of vengeance, but the police apprehend him and force him into getting his revenge by infiltrating the gang of robbin' hoods.

Scientist Clayton Forrester (Gene Barry) and Sylvia Van Buren (Ann Robinson) are the first to arrive at the site of a meteorite crash. Soon after, an alien war machine emerges and begins killing at random. The Marines are called in, but they're no match for the aliens' force field. Forrester and Van Buren, however, are able to wound one of the creatures and procure a sample of its blood. They take it to Los Angeles where they hope, through testing, to be able to discover the aliens' weakness.

Things start to happen when a fussy woman customer accuses a model of wearing some rubies that were stolen from her the year before - everyone regards her as a crackpot but when the model dies in a fall from a broken barrier and Lady Marjorie (the crackpot) is murdered at her flat, both women wearing a distinctive blood orange gown, suddenly Scotland Yard is called in...

Wednesday, April 12 - Hollywood Barn Dance

Hollywood Barn Dance (1947)

Based on and built around the west coast radio program, "The Hollywood Barn Dance", although no members of the 1947 cast of the program are in the film, but the better-known (on a national scale) Ernest Tubb and His Texas Troubadors, Jack Guthrie and Jimmy and Leon Short more than make up for that. The slight plot, around 18 songs, begins with Tubb and his band searching for $2000 needed to rebuild their town chuch after it burned down while they were rehearsing in it. Hollywood, here they come.

Stevens also rents a room in their house more as a way to be near pretty Elizabeth Rimplegar, than to help their finances. Stevens faces competition from Elizabeth's beau, Ronald, a free-loading writer who remains oblivious to her money woes.

The story of a Kentucky racing family now in genteel poverty with mother Margaret Mann and children Frank Coghlan and Patricia Scott. Their proud stable is now reduced to but one horse, Blue Streak, a promising 3 year old whom they hope can win the Kentucky Derby and pull them out of poverty.

But Coghlan gets himself in a jackpot(?) over a killing and he's serving a manslaughter term though he swears innocence (we know he's innocent). Reporter Eddie Nugent helps him with clearing himself, but meanwhile Coghlan has to escape from prison to ride in (and win) the Kentucky Derby.

A male ballet superstar is suspected of murdering his first wife (his former ballet partner) and now possibly threatening his new wife and ballet partner.

Andre Sanine has not performed since his wife's death on stage. He has been haunted by Le Spectre de la Rose, the music being played when she collapsed. But he is willing to attempt a comeback arranged by impresario Max "Poli" Polikoff, who tries to persuade ballet instructor Madame La Sylph that the time has come for Sanine, her former student, to return.

Sanine is to perform with Haidi, the company's new prodigy. As they rehearse, they also fall in love. La Sylph cautions her that she saw Sanine's rage in person before Nina's death. Haidi attempts to keep Sanine by her side for several days, concerned over signs of a relapse in his behavior.

Hearing the music, Sanine picks up a knife and places it at the throat of the sleeping Haidi, the woman he loves. He comes to his senses at the last possible second, then sacrifices himself for her sake.

Now, in the present, the original twelve guests are members of the family fighting over the will and someone wants the money badly enough to kill for it. Detective Dick Purcell is called in to solve the crime, aided by comic sidekicks and the usual inept policemen who only seem to inhabit "B" mysteries...

As she sits at the table inside, she thinks back to the banquet held there 13 years earlier, when she was a little girl. Only 12 of 13 guests had attended, and the manor's owner, the Morgan family patriarch, who was then dying, has since passed on. The chance to claim the bulk of the estate fortune has resulted in an ongoing campaign of murder by someone targeting the original 12 guests, whose dead bodies are being left at the table in the same seats they had occupied originally.

Frank Burdon (Sir Rex Harrison) is a new reporter on a small-town Scottish paper. He's told to interview local politician William Gow (Cecil Parker), then left in charge of the paper overnight. He sees Gow being high-handed to a woman who can't afford to license her dog, and decides to run that story instead of the expected puff piece. Both are decent men, but a little too proud to back down, and the battle escalates into a criminal case. But at the same time, Burdon and Gow's daughter Victoria (Vivien Leigh) are falling in love.

Trotter pollster Pete Marshall is trying to find a missing coworker. In a rural town he stumbles onto the roughian Fleagle family. Bert and Mert would just as soon "splatter" snoopers with their rifles. However, Ma Johnson focuses the family energies on finding cousin Bonnie Fleagle's $70,000 bank job stash, somewhere around the large old rickety house. Claire Matthews, the daughter of a man implicated in Bonnie's bank job, also comes in search of the money to try and clear her father's name. Marshall and Matthews team up to try and decode Grandma Fleagle's strange deathbed clue but with Mr. Johnson attempting to poison people and Bonnie Fleagle showing up herself after a prison escape, it's anybody's guess as to who will find the money first.
