Longfellow Deeds lives in a small town and leads a small-town kind of life, including playing the tuba in the town band. When a relative dies and leaves Deeds a fortune, Longfellow picks up his tuba and moves to the big city, where he becomes an instant target for everyone from the greedy opera committee to the sensationalist daily newspaper. Deeds outwits them all until Babe Bennett comes along. Babe is a hot-shot reporter who figures that the best way to get close to Deeds is to pose as a damsel in distress. When small-town boy meets big-city girl, anything can, and does, happen.

Reporter Larry Doyle (Frank Albertson) is on top of the world when he exposes the crimes of organized crime boss Louis Pedroni (Max Hoffman Jr.). His success, however, is spoiled in one fell swoop: He's fired from his job, kidnapped by Pedroni's thugs, knocked out and thrown on a train. Eventually, he wakes up in St. Louis, where he meets the lovely Ann (Joan Woodbury).
He then has to pawn his engraved revolver with a fence in league with the gangsters also part of Pardoni's mob. The gang gets the revolver from the fence and plant it at their next job, but Larry is on their trail and captures them at the pawn shop.

Reporter Larry Doyle from Chicago gets $50 for breaking an important story and does too much celebrating. He ends up broke in St. Louis. He sits down at a lunch counter with beautiful Anne Oglivie (Maxine Doyle). She finds that she only has 10 cents to pay for her 20 cent coffee and donut. Larry secretly pays for her. Realizing that a young girl broke in the city could end up in trouble, Larry follows her around to help her out. Having no place to stay, he gets a hotel room for the two of them. Anne is reluctant, but Larry reassures her that he's a square kind of guy. He orders an expensive $35 a day hotel suite which has two bedrooms with separate keys.
Larry then goes after a slippery gangster called "the Eel."

Escaping a crashing zeppelin, Tracy has foiled the Spider's speed plane plot and moves on to the next, investigating missing gold aboard the oceanic steamer, the Atlantis. The Spider's men are on board the vessel and Tracy battles the foreman Clancy, the two falling dockside when a hull plate falls from far above towards Dick.

A couple of thieves, Beecham and Evans, rob a Chicago socialite's diamond necklace. They give it to the man they're working for, Arthur Burdette, who promptly double-crosses them. A diamond expert who examines the necklace is then found dead (later, in Iowa).
Burdette slips away to a small Iowa town under an assumed name. When he hears city attorney George Browning has fired secretary Hannah Kelly, he offers Hannah a job (he pretends to offer her a job - she's already working for him). Browning has no idea that Burdette and Hannah are actually accomplices in crime, and pays no heed when new secretary Edie Hanson suggests that possibility.
Betrayed crooks Beecham and Evans show up, looking for Burdette and the necklace. Browning doesn't realize how involved Hannah is until she shoots the two thieves and ends up having the stolen necklace on her. Edie helps him get the better of Hannah and Burdette, also making Browning realize he's falling for the new girl.

Forrester and Van Buren, however, are able to wound one of the creatures and procure a sample of its blood. They take it to Los Angeles where they hope, through testing, to be able to discover the aliens' weakness.

The slight plot, around 18 songs, begins with Tubb and his band searching for $2000 needed to rebuild their town chuch after it burned down while they were rehearsing in it. A male ballet superstar is suspected of murdering his first wife (his former ballet partner) and now possibly threatening his new wife and ballet partner.
Andre Sanine has not performed since his wife's death on stage. He has been haunted by Le Spectre de la Rose, the music being played when she collapsed. But he is willing to attempt a comeback arranged by impresario Max "Poli" Polikoff, who tries to persuade ballet instructor Madame La Sylph that the time has come for Sanine, her former student, to return.
Sanine is to perform with Haidi, the company's new prodigy. As they rehearse, they also fall in love. La Sylph cautions her that she saw Sanine's rage in person before Nina's death. Haidi attempts to keep Sanine by her side for several days, concerned over signs of a relapse in his behavior.
Hearing the music, Sanine picks up a knife and places it at the throat of the sleeping Haidi, the woman he loves. He comes to his senses at the last possible second, then sacrifices himself for her sake.

Marie Morgan (Ginger Rogers) has been lured to an old abandoned house by a false note from a friend, and is in jeopardy although she doesn't yet realize it. As she sits at the table inside, she thinks back to the banquet held there 13 years earlier, when she was a little girl. Only 12 of 13 guests had attended, and the manor's owner, the Morgan family patriarch, who was then dying, has since passed on. The chance to claim the bulk of the estate fortune has resulted in an ongoing campaign of murder by someone targeting the original 12 guests, whose dead bodies are being left at the table in the same seats they had occupied originally.

Both are decent men, but a little too proud to back down, and the battle escalates into a criminal case. But at the same time, Burdon and Gow's daughter Victoria (Vivien Leigh) are falling in love.

However, Ma Johnson focuses the family energies on finding cousin Bonnie Fleagle's $70,000 bank job stash, somewhere around the large old rickety house. Claire Matthews, the daughter of a man implicated in Bonnie's bank job, also comes in search of the money to try and clear her father's name. Marshall and Matthews team up to try and decode Grandma Fleagle's strange deathbed clue but with Mr. Johnson attempting to poison people and Bonnie Fleagle showing up herself after a prison escape, it's anybody's guess as to who will find the money first.
