Shopworn (1932)
In this melodrama from the Depression era, a wealthy young doctor falls in love with a humble waitress and asks for her hand. Unfortunately, the doctor's proposition is opposed by his snooty mother who wants to see him marry a girl with higher status. The manipulative mother insures this by convincing her friend, a judge, to sentence the waitress to a prison workhouse for three-months. The girl does her time and is released. She soon becomes a famous singer and she resumes her love affair with the doctor. At this point the mother finally gives in and bestows her blessing upon the happy couple.
