Framed by her boss in a matter of bad bonds, secretary Martha Daniel (Mary Astor) is sentenced to jail. But she hides the truth from her young son, Dinky (Jackie Cooper), who is attending military school, by having her lawyer send him letters from her home address. When Dinky reads in the paper about his mother's imprisonment, he decides not to be a burden and leaves his school to go to an orphanage, where he writes to Martha using his old school stationary. But soon Martha learns the truth.
