Monday, August 28 - Side Streets
Side Streets (1934)
Tim O’Hara (Paul Kelly) is a down-and-out sailor who is shown kindness by Bertha Krasnoff (Aline MacMahon), a spinster who owns a fur shop. The two marry but personal tragedy and Tim’s philandering ways threaten to tear them apart.
Aline MacMahon plays Bertha Krasnoff, owner of a San Francisco fur shop who takes in a penniless, homeless sailor (Paul Kelly), first as her employee, then as her husband. It soon becomes clear, however, especially after Miss Dvorak shows up, that Bertha's hubby is a womanizer who only married her for her money. After a string of extra-marital affairs and childbirth traumas, the husband realizes Bertha is the woman for him after all.
Aline McMahon is Bertha, a "side street" furrier. She's not one of the big outfits so she has to be cagey and good with the customers to make a respectable but not great living, and she does. She meets a down and out sailor, Tim (Paul Kelly). She's lonely, he needs room and board, she offers him a job, he takes it. It isn't long before it's obvious he's just milking the situation and doing as little as possible to earn his keep, probably sensing Bertha's loneliness will keep a roof over his head. He strengthens his position even more when he marries her.
After marriage, Tim is kind enough to Bertha, but a new sweetie soon has his eye in the person of Marguerite (Ann Dvorak). He's thinking about heading back out to sea but then he finds a bill for an obstetrician visit among Bertha's things and suddenly becomes a changed man. He makes as close to a confession to Bertha as you'd ever get of a slicky boy like Tim, and Bertha says she's known all along and forgives him. Tim breaks it off with Marguerite, determined to turn over a new leaf, but there's one thing with Marguerite he can't break off - to wit, another baby!

The boys show up and Linc senses something is wrong and decides to hang around. Tod, as usual is detached and doesn't want to get involved. Linc tries to convince her to break away from him. The police eventually catch up and Phillips is killed in a shoot- out. She's back to her lonely life.

Thursday, August 24 - Thriller: Portrait Without a Face
Thriller (1960–1962): Portrait Without a Face (Season 2 | Episode 14 - aired 25 December 1961)
This is about an arrogant, egocentric artist who has great talent but no compassion. He is hateful to everyone. One night, someone stands above the skylight and fires an arrow from a crossbow into his head, killing him instantly. Because he has a huge backlog of paintings, a curator is brought in to catalogue them. His wife is in possession of the paintings, but they ultimately belong to a big gallery. Soon a painting starts to form on a blank canvas, leading to the thought that the artist was returning from the grave to give up his murderer.
Narcissistic artist, Robertson Moffat, gets an arrow to the head by a hooded shooter with a bow and arrow who stood on a balcony and shot through an open skylight. Several months after his death, a gallery representative, Arthur Henshaw, comes to take some of the paintings back, presumably to sale. The wife unlocks and opens the studio door and tells him he can take any and all that he wants, even the blank canvas. Of course when Arthur looks at that canvas there's a partially finished painting showing the upper torso painted of the dead artist in the crime scene. As the story goes on more of the painting gets filled in and the killer will soon be revealed. Furthermore an expert in Moffat's art (Banner) incredibly concludes that it must be the artist although he can't believe that's possible.

A secret jet aircraft capable of traveling three times the speed of sound is being developed by a group of scientists secretly. Conflict also arises when one of his fellow scientists, taking advantage of Heathley's lack of attention toward his wife, Lydia (Phyllis Calvert), makes some moves on her. Then there is the question of just who is the enemy agent on the project. The single-minded Heathly, much to his dismay and little to his credit, uncovers him when he chooses his co-pilot.

Sunday, August 13 - Stablemates
Stablemates (1938)
Mickey is a stable boy for Lady Q, a race horse that has the potential to be a champion. When drunken bum Tom Terry brusquely moves into the stable with him, they are constantly at odds. Because Lady Q loses a big race, her owner plans to sell her to the glue factory, but Mickey buys her with his meager savings. Mickey learns from Tom that Lady Q has a tumor on her foot, and discovers that the derelict was once a brilliant veterinarian. Mickey convinces Tom to operate on Lady Q, and despite his alcoholic shakes, the operation is succcessful. The two take the horse on the road, and soon become very close. Because Mickey is an orphan, he suggests that they "legally" adopt each other. Tom is reluctant, but soon agrees and the two plan to enter Lady Q in a big race. To make money for the entrance fee, they stay at a farm owned by five-time widow Beulah Flanders. When they have almost earned the entrance fee, Tom, who is now a sober and devoted father, tells Mickey to go to the track to get an application blank. While there, Mickey runs into detective Barney Donovan, who reveals that Tom is wanted for his part in the death of a horse and jockey in a fixed race. When Mickey returns to the farm, he pretends that he doesn't care for Tom anymore, strikes him, and leaves with the horse. The next day he is able to get the money he needs by impressing Mrs. Shepherd, a stable owner. Lady Q develops a sore hoof, though, and is only saved by Tom, who arrives with a special shoe for her. Mickey finally confesses that it was his fear for Tom that made him act as if he didn't care, and the two realize that they are truly father and son. Tom is supposed to leave right away to avoid capture, but instead watches Mickey win the race. Although he now has enough money to become a veterinarian, like his father, Mickey is heartbroken when Donovan apprehends Tom. The two have an emotional farewell, but Mickey is relieved when Mrs. Shepherd tells him that Tom will serve no more than a year in jail.

Thursday, August 10 - The Edgar Wallace Mystery Theatre: Downfall
The Edgar Wallace Mystery Theatre (1960–1965): Downfall (Season 5 | Episode 4 - aired January 1964)
The story has a successful defense attorney (Maurice Denham) winning a case at the outset that frees a man (T.P. McKenna) tried for murder. Denham insists on the man's innocence unlike those around him, who make a case that he's a psychopath who kills when frustrated by a female. Denham is not getting along with his wife, Nadja Regin. He'd like to be free of her. Denham hires McKenna as the family chauffeur and sees to it that McKenna and Regin have plenty of time together. Denham also buys a gun and lets McKenna know where it is when he leaves for some over night work in Dorset with his assistant whom he has a desire for.
This all works out in surprisingly ironic ways.
