Clara Hammon and the wheelchair bound John Brant exit a wedding chapel in Las Vegas after being married but refuse to buy any photos of themselves. After Clara drives them away, John Brant removes his disguise to reveal Earl Mauldin an out of work actor. Later, after a trial run of trotters John Brant reveals he wants the horse from Jo Ann Blanchard and her brother Terry. Jo Ann Blanchard seeks help from Perry Mason when the wealthy John Brant threatens to take control of all of her inheritance including her horse, something that Brant is really after. Brant made an arrangement with their family to keep control of all of their assets due to Terry's excessive spending. When the wheelchair-bound Brant is found dead in the horse's stable, suspicion naturally falls on Jo Ann and she is charged with murder.
