Jim Warlock (Ronald Colman), a prominent London lawyer, is confessing to his wife, the aptly named Clemency (Kay Francis). A few months earlier, while Clemency was in Italy with her sister, Jim was goaded by a playboy friend into having dinner with a shop girl named Doris (Phyllis Barry). Unexpectedly charmed, Jim began a love affair with the young woman. As Clemency listens, Jim relates the events leading to the scandal that has ruined his marriage and his career.
