Architect Harold Ventimore (Tony Randall) buys a large antique container that turns out to imprison a genie named Fakrash (Burl Ives), whom Harold inadvertently sets free. Fakrash is effusively grateful for his release, and persistently tries to do favors for Harold to show his gratitude. However he has been in the brass bottle for a long time, and Fakrash’s unfamiliarity with the modern world causes all sorts of problems when he tries to please his rescuer. Harold ends up in a great deal of trouble, including with his girlfriend, Sylvia Kenton (Barbara Eden).

Paul (Charles Ruggles) and Alan (Phil Harris) are the best of pals. Both board a steamer going from New York to California via the Panama Canal with very different goals in mind: Paul doesn’t want to get in any trouble with his wife waiting for him at the destination, while Alan simply doesn’t want to get married. To ensure this, Alan writes up a list of fake affairs that Paul hasn’t committed (“Compared to you, Casanova was an Eskimo!”) and sends them to Paul’s wife, with the envelope printed “Read this if Alan ever gets married.”

Alan’s complications come in the form of his longtime paramour, Elsa (Nissen). They’ve chased each other around Europe and have just started getting close to serious. To throw them off, Paul enlists Hickey (Chick Chandler) to instead Alan into the arms of school teacher Laurie (Mack); unfortunately, that only puts him on another path towards marital bliss.

Meanwhile, two women get stranded in Charlie Ruggle’s cabin after a wild party. They spend most of the film in their negligees, cracking wise. Ruggles is forced to portray the women as his nieces to keep from getting in trouble.

A popular playboy goes on a cruise from New York in winter to California. He brings a friend to keep him from getting too serious with any of the many eligible women on the cruise. The plot complicates when he does fall in love with one and attempts to pursue her over the objections of his friend.

When a visiting American senator decides to make Paris off-limits to enlisted military personnel, the daughter of the United States Ambassador to France decides to show him that American servicemen can be gentlemen by dating one of them without revealing her lofty social status. Sergeant Sullivan takes Joan to colorful nightclub cabarets, and on a comical trip up the Eiffel Tower, all the time believing her to be a Dior fashion model.

Thinking she has an emergency back in America, Sullivan offers to buy her an airline ticket, for which she is grateful, until she hears that counterfeit plane tickets are a common scam used by American servicemen to impress girls. Sullivan's friend, the homespun Corporal O'Connor, all the while is a guest of the Ambassador's family and other top brass, and tries to alert Sullivan as to Joan's true identity, but is unable to contact Sullivan (and is sworn to secrecy).

When Sullivan drops into the Dior fashion show one day to look for Joan, he discovers that the staff have never heard of her. However he sees Joan observing the show with her father's friend, the Senator, whom he mistakenly assumes must be her sugar daddy. On their last dinner date, Joan walks out on Sullivan, when he accidentally spills wine on her and offers to take her to his hotel room, thinking he is dishonorable. Finally, one evening Sullivan and the Ambassador's family, by coincidence, separately attend the same ballet performance of Swan Lake, where during the intermission Sullivan learns her true identity and their misunderstanding is resolved.

A mysterious old woman named Malla (Estelle Hemsley) who claims to have been brought to America 140 years ago by Arab slavers approaches endocrinologist Dr. Paul Talbot (Phillip Terry) and promises to reveal to him the secret of eternal youth.

Following her back to Africa, he and his aging, unhappy wife June (Coleen Gray) witness a secret ceremony of the Nando tribe that utilizes orchid pollen and a male victim's pineal gland secretions extracted from the back of the neck via a special ring to temporarily transform Malla once more into a young and beautiful girl (Kim Hamilton).

After discovering her conniving husband only brought her along as a test subject, June has him killed as a sacrifice and becomes young herself, though she is warned that it will not last long. She steals the ring and escapes back to the United States after killing the guide her husband had hired. Pretending to be her own 'niece' Terry Hart, she proceeds to keep herself young by killing men for their pineal extract.

She quickly becomes enamored with her lawyer Neil Foster (Grant Williams), a man half her actual age, and kills his jealous fiancée Sally (Gloria Talbott), both to maintain her youthful appearance and to eliminate the competition.

When the cops come to investigate the murders, June uses Sally's pineal gland when alone but finds it does not work due to it being female, and before the cops find her, she throws herself out a window and dies, and when they view her body it is in more of a shriveled state than ever.

In France, the former Countess Moncorn comes to the Haussemont Castle posing as the medium Claire Grandier for a séance with her telepathic friend and scientist Professor Gruber. They are welcomed by the Duke de Haussemont, who recognizes her. There is an interruption in the séance and the Duke invites Claire and Gruber to stay in his castle and offers his basement for the professor to proceed in his experiments. However Claire has an agenda, since she holds a grudge against the Haussemont family that she blames that was responsible for the suicide of her beloved husband Phillippe to acquire his properties. Claire uses the Book of Astarov associated to the ability and knowledge of Professor Gruber to reanimate a corpse controlled by Gruber seeking revenge against the responsible for the death of Phillippe. But her scheme gets out of control.

Things get complicated when Susan sneaks away and is found in Dickie's apartment, and downright zany when he is court ordered to date the teen as a way of easing her attraction.

A young woman, Greta, loses her memory following an accident with a carriage and finds hospitality at the villa of two wealthy landowners Eva and Walter. But even Dr. Sturges who pays her first visit is interested in her, and above all he is interested in the amulet that she wears around her neck. In fact, he is carrying out mysterious experiments to bring the dead back to life through ancient formulas attributed to the Incas and that amulet is very familiar to him. Things get complicated when Ewa discovers her affair with her husband and, in a raptus of jealousy, she kills her by walling her alive. But a few days later, during a masquerade party, Greta mysteriously reappears with a skeletal face and begins to persecute Ewa pushing her to suicide - and the dead will not end here.

Arriving in a small Illinois town by train, Casanova Brown is met by Madge Ferris and tells her not to bring up his trip to New York.

Cas decides to ask Madge to marry him, even though her father J.J. warns him against it, saying Madge is nothing but trouble. Cas leaves town because of a letter from a Dr. Zernerke summoning him to Chicago, but promises to be back in time for the wedding.

A baby girl is at the Chicago hospital and Cas is asked for an explanation. He tells of his New York experience with Isabel Drury, of how they fell in love and decided to wed, only to have Cas repeatedly upset Isabel's mother by insulting her belief in astrology, ignoring her warnings that their union would be cursed, then inadvertently burning down the Drurys' house.

After the marriage is annulled, Cas thought it was over. But now there's a baby. Cas disguises himself as a doctor and kidnaps the kid. He then decides to adopt it, but in a hurry to prove he has a stable home life, he proposes to the first woman he sees, Monica, a hotel maid, that they get married immediately.

Madge is left at the altar, Isabel comes back claiming it was just a prank she was playing to get even with Cas for leaving her, and it turns out Monica didn't get to marry him after all because they didn't have a proper license. Cas and Isabel decide to give it another try.

Helen and Ken are a pretty strange couple. She is a pathological liar, and he is a scrupulously honest (and therefore unsuccessful) lawyer. Helen starts a new job, and when her employer is found dead, all the (circumstantial) evidence points at her. She is put on trial for murder, and her husband defends her. He thinks she is lying again when she says she didn't do it, and insists she plead that she did, but in self defense. Charlie, a shady, odd character who may or may not know something about what really happened, hangs around the courtroom and jail making rude comments and noises. After Helen is acquitted, he tries to blackmail them.

Tuesday, June 11 - Beauty for Sale

Beauty for Sale (1933)

Small town girl Letty Lawson (Madge Evans) moves to New York City and lives in a boarding house run by Mrs. Merrick (May Robson). Eventually she asks her friend and Mrs. Merrick's daughter, Carol (Una Merkel), to get her a job at her workplace, an exclusive beauty salon owned by Madame Sonia Barton (Hedda Hopper). Though both Carol and her brother Bill (Edward J. Nugent), who is in love with her, warn her that it is not a fit place for a young woman of good character, Letty insists she knows what she is getting into.

(The story opens with Letty (Madge Evans) sending her mother back to their hometown of Paducah after her father has died. In a front porch step conversation with her landlady's daughter (Una Merkel as Carol), we learn that Letty's "rich dad" died with nothing but debts and after paying them all off there was only 600 dollars, which Letty credited to her mother. A recent beauty school graduate, Letty now has to earn a living given that she has no money.)

After proving herself, Letty is sent on a house call to attend to spoiled, scatterbrained, chatty Mrs. Sherwood (Alice Brady). When she leaves, she discovers her hat has been chewed up by Mrs. Smallwood's Pekingese. Lawyer Mr. Sherwood (Otto Kruger) returns home and is quite fond of Letty and offers her to go and buy her an expensive replacement. By chance, she meets him again when they both seek shelter from a rainstorm in the same place. Smallwood is delighted when a fear of lightning makes Letty reflexively seek the comfort of his arms several times. They start seeing each other, though nothing very improper occurs.

Meanwhile, Carol has a rich, older, indulgent boyfriend, Freddy Gordon (Charley Grapewin), while Jane (Florine McKinney), another salon employee, is secretly seeing Burt (Phillips Holmes), Madame Sonia's mining engineer son.

Finally, Sherwood asks Letty to take the next step in their relationship. She asks for a week to think it over. Carol convinces Freddy to take her along on his business trip to Paris. While seeing her off aboard the ocean liner, Letty runs into the Bartons. When Letty later mentions that Burt is leaving on the same ship as Carol, Jane becomes very upset. It turns out that Burt had promised to marry her the next day after she told him she was pregnant. Though Letty tries to comfort her, late that night Jane leaps from her window to her death.

Influenced by the examples of both Jane and Carol (after her first and only love turned out to be a married man who eventually went back to his wife, she became calculating and cynical), Letty turns Sherwood down. Then, she reluctantly agrees to marry Bill.

Specifically requested by Mrs. Sherwood, Letty is forced by Madame Sonia to go to her home. When her client notices her engagement ring, she reveals that she is getting married soon. Mr. Sherwood coolly congratulates her. However, on the wedding day, she cannot go through with it.

The next day, Mrs. Sherwood asks her husband for a divorce so she can marry Robert Abbott (John Roche), the architect of the new country mansion she had commissioned. She tells him that she will ask for no alimony, as she is independently wealthy. Sherwood is furious, as it is after Letty's supposed wedding, but is quite willing to let his wife go. Carol, having finally gotten Freddy to propose, goes house hunting. The real estate agent takes them to see the Sherwood mansion. When he reveals that it is being sold because the couple are divorcing, Letty rushes over to the real estate office to stop the sale and be reunited with her love.

The Maggie is a typical Clyde puffer, a small, aged cargo boat with a varied, irascible and argumentative crew. MacTaggart (Alex Mackenzie), her rascal of a captain, is in dire need of £300 to renew his licence. In a shipping office in Glasgow, he overhears Mr Pusey (Hubert Gregg), an Englishman complete with bowler hat and umbrella, trying to arrange for the transportation of some personal furniture for his boss, American Calvin B. Marshall (Paul Douglas). The big, reputable shipping company has nothing immediately available, so MacTaggart gets the job when Pusey mistakenly believes that he works for the company and that the more modern vessel docked next to the Maggie is MacTaggart's.

Marshall is a wealthy industrialist, a stubborn and determined self-made man. When he eventually learns the truth, he sets out in pursuit by aeroplane and hired car. Catching up with the puffer, he puts Pusey on board to ensure the cargo is transferred to another boat. But his underling is no match for the captain; he ends up in jail on a charge of poaching. Marshall realizes that he will have to handle the matter personally. After another costly chase, he boards the boat himself to spur the cargo transfer. However, the route and timing of the voyage are governed by MacTaggart, tidal variations and local community priorities.

Marshall's hostile attitude gradually softens somewhat. He is particularly touched by the loyalty of the "wee boy", Dougie (Tommy Kearins), to his captain. At one point, when Marshall threatens to buy the boat from the owner, MacTaggart's sister, and sell it for scrap, Dougie drops a board on him, knocking him unconscious. His mood changes again when the wily Mactaggart moors the puffer under a wooden jetty; as the tide rises, the jetty (due for dismantling anyway) is damaged, making it impossible to transfer the furniture to the deeper draught vessel when it arrives.

At one of the unscheduled stops, the crew attend the hundredth birthday party of an islander, and Marshall chats with a nineteen-year-old girl who is pondering her future. She has two suitors, an up-and-coming, ambitious store owner and a poor fisherman. The American advises her to choose the former, but she believes she will marry the latter, explaining that he will give her his time, rather than just things. This strikes a chord with Marshall. He is having marital difficulties, and the furniture is an attempt to patch things up with his wife.

As they finally near their destination, the engine fails. Marshall manages to repair the old, poorly maintained machinery, but it is too late. The Maggie is driven by wind and tide onto some rocks. Marshall asks MacTaggart if they can save her by jettisoning the cargo. Mactaggart then apologetically informs him that he neglected to insure the furniture, but Marshall orders it thrown overboard anyway. The Maggie is saved.

At journey's end, Marshall, with some prodding by Dougie, even allows Mactaggart to keep the money he so desperately needs. In appreciation of his magnanimity, Mactaggart renames his boat the Calvin B. Marshall.

Thursday, June 6 - Andy Hardy's Blonde Trouble

Blonde Trouble picks up from the previous installment of the Andy Hardy saga with Andy on a train to begin his college career at Wainwright College. While on the train, he meets Kay Wilson (Bonita Granville), and learns that Wainright College has just become a coeducational institution. The Dean of Wainwright College (and soon to be Andy's faculty advisor), Dr. Standish (Herbert Marshall) is also on the train. Dr. Standish's identity is not revealed to Andy until later.

Problems begin almost immediately for Andy as he learns his father forgot to give him his train ticket. Lyn and Lee Walker (Wilde Twins) are also on the train in a private cabin. They are on their way to Wainright College as well, but their father thinks Lee is on her way to spend some time with her aunt in Vermont. The twins can't handle the idea of being separated, so they travel together to Wainright College in hopes of passing themselves off as one girl. On the train, and later at Wainwright, the girls pull the switcheroo on Andy, leaving him completely confused with this mysterious blonde's ever changing behavior.

After discovering that they have run out of money, the twins coax Andy into giving them a total of $37.95 cash before he realizes that he has been fooled. After classes at Wainwright College begin, Andy's troubles continue to build, causing him to consider quitting college. Before this happens, though, he manages to help the twins out of their trouble.

Attractive but treacherous Louise Douglas has convinced her husband (a bank messenger) to steal $53,000 and flee the country with her. She also has convinced her paramour (a truck driver) to assault her husband and take the money so that HE can flee the country with her. Dan Mathews' suspicions are aroused by Ms. Douglas' lack of genuine concern for her unconscious husband and he launches an all-out effort to apprehend her. Aware that she is being pursued, the scheming Louise deserts the truck driver at her first opportunity and is able to steal a car from yet another would-be romantic interest in a bold attempt to elude Dan's unrelenting pursuit.
