After divorcing his nagging wife, researcher Tony (Hugh Williams) takes charge of a government project in a remote setting, with only two assistants, Prendergast (Basil Radford) and Fotheringham (Naunton Wayne), and a butler (Wylie Watson). The men's solitude is disrupted by the arrival of Gay Sultzman (Joan Greenwood), a young woman traumatized into muteness when her evacuee ship was torpedoed. Initially annoyed with her presence, the men soon find themselves mesmerized by Gay's silence.
