Under the name "Lenny Frazier", typhoid carrier Leonard Forbes obtains a job on Hank Dooley's farm (he's already working there when the show starts). When Dooley's young daughter dies of the disease, the Health Department investigates. Forbes knows that he is in violation of the registration requirements for typhoid carriers, so he flees with his wife Helen (he actually flees before the daughter dies). Dan Mathews learns of Forbes' background and orders an intensive search. Helen learns of the Highway Patrol's involvement and convinces Forbes that he needs to turn himself in and face the grief-stricken (and vengeful) Hank Dooley. Dan and Officer Larrabee hear of the Forbes' plans and arrive at the Dooley farm just as the distraught father is attempting to extract armed revenge for his daughter's death.
Ex-con Harry Burke and his brother Tommy (a skilled mechanic and sometime stock car racer) stage a series of armed robberies, using a hand-built supercharged roadster to escape pursuing Highway Patrol officers. When one of their getaways results in the hit-and-run death of an innocent woman, Dan Mathews and Officers Dorsey and Larrabee redouble their efforts. They obtain assistance from Bert Case, the head of the local hot rod club, to determine who may have a car fitting the description of the Burkes' roadster. They also prepare to quickly establish roadblocks so that they will be in position to intercept the Burkes if they strike again. When the Burkes commit another holdup, they are unaware that Dan and Officer Dorsey have already eliminated the other possible suspects and are headed for the Burkes' home, where an armed confrontation becomes inevitable.
