Using inside information from Sandy Collins, Jack and George Willis stop a truck carrying Collins and 11 fellow itinerant fruit pickers, all of whom are carrying their month's pay of $200. The Willises rob them at gunpoint and shoot Joe Valentine when he disobeys their orders and attempts to follow them. Collins gives Dan Mathews false information in an attempt to divert the investigation, but Dan easily exposes the flaws in his story. When Valentine dies, interrogation of Collins intensifies and additional evidence implicating him in the crime is discovered. Collins breaks down and provides information that Dan uses to set up roadblocks that will trap the Willises before they can flee the area.
Ranchers Ted and Harry Johnson are openly disdainful of George Wilson, their sister Iris's new city-bred husband who lives on their ranch. George and Iris argue about the situation, and Iris is critically shot and wounded when she foolishly tosses a loaded revolver in George's direction. George panics and flees, but quick-tempered Ted Johnson is determined to exact revenge for his sister's (presumed) death and goes after George with a rifle. Iris subsequently survives an emergency operation and weakly admits that the shooting was an accident. Given this information, Dan Mathews uses the Highway Patrol helicopter for an all-out effort to locate George Wilson and Ted Johnson in the rough terrain before a fatal tragedy occurs.
