Thursday, October 31 - Highway Patrol: Psycho

Dan Mathews and Sergeants Walters and Merritt answer a call in a remote area concerning a man with a rifle who is taking potshots. The man is on a hill and takes several shots and Dan and the two sergeants, but they are eventually able to search his car. The search reveals that he is novelist Guy Pemberton and that he is undergoing psychiatric treatment and taking a powerful drug for arthritic symptoms. They send for Pemberton's psychiatrist, who advises them that the writer is having a psychotic reaction to the drug and is "acting out" the ending of his latest novel. Since the novel ends with the protagonist's suicide, Dan acts quickly and takes a high-risk course of action that will enable him to get close enough to try to subdue Pemberton and end the standoff.
