Roland Wolf (Robin Renucci) poses as a reporter to interview a popular television personality (Philippe Noiret) he believes is responsible for the disappearance of his sister. The struggling actress had taken a job as a companion to the star's sickly ward Catherine (Anne Brochet). Roland discovers Catherine is being drugged by her benefactor who has stolen her inheritance and possibly committed murder.
Private detective Martin Kane works in New York solving crimes. Depending on the year, Kane was either smooth and suave or hard bitten and the cooperation he received from the police depended on the year. The only constant was Happy McMann's tobacco shop where Kane hung out.

When Arthur Talbot testifies that Harry Nevans gunned down a business associate the accused man promises that he will exact his revenge on his shy bookkeeper even if he is convicted. When the bookkeeper's wife receives a phone call from a woman stating she will kill Talbot per Nevans orders, she goes to Martin Kane for protection.
