Saturday, Sept. 2 - Merton of the Movies & Just a Cute Kid

Merton of the Movies (1947)

In a small Kansas town, theater usher Merton Gill (Red Skelton) has aspirations to become a silent movie actor like his hero, Lawrence Rupert (Leon Ames). When Merton manages to thwart a robbery attempt by mimicking his favorite screen star, he's dispatched to Hollywood on a publicity junket to help rejuvenate Rupert's flagging film career. But Merton's own attempts to break into show business are ridiculed by all except a friendly stuntwoman named Phyllis Montague (Virginia O'Brien).

A Kansas bumpkin goes to Hollywood to become a movie star and gets a job burlesquing his favorite actor - only he thinks the role is serious.

In 1915, Kansas theatre usher Merton Gill is a rabid silent-movie fan. When he brings Mammoth Studios free publicity by imitating star Lawrence Rupert's heroics, they bring him to Hollywood to generate another headline; he thinks he'll get a movie contract. Disillusioned, he haunts the casting offices, where he meets and is consoled by Phyllis Montague, bit player and stunt-woman. When Merton finally gets his "break," though, it's not quite what he envisioned.

Just a Cute Kid (1940)

When he has to pay a debt to a fearsome money lender, Cliff Edwards accepts the help of his pal Frank Faylen who takes him to a scientist where he can sell his body, but things get worse than expected in this Damon Runyon story.
