The firm's secretary, Melody Lee Mercer, gets a postcard from an old friend asking for help and she talks Rex into taking her out to an old rundown mansion, where they get stuck for the night by a storm. The mansion is supposedly haunted by the ghost of the owner's great grandfather, who looks like him. The manservant there wants to talk privately with Rex but never gets a chance to - by the next day when they return to New Orleans, Rex and Melody learn the man is dead and is being buried in a hurry. Rex returns to the mansion and finds out the truth - where the local quicksand bog is.
