Patrolman Joe Kline serves as a "resident officer" to a rural area and is required to advise headquarters of his whereabouts at all times. He discovers a marijuana field while hunting and is murdered when he confronts growers Marty St. Clair and Nelson Potter. The two dispose of Kline's body in a remote area and attempt to make his death appear to be a hunting accident. When the normally-reliable Kline does not make his regular call to headquarters, suspicions are aroused and his body is discovered quickly. Dan Mathews rejects the possibility of a hunting accident after he learns that a marijuana leaf was in one of Kline's pockets. Dan deduces that Kline discovered the field while hunting and stakes out the St. Clair farm. He discovers that the illegal plants are being harvested for shipment in a truck driven by Potter, so he sends Sergeant Morris to tail the truck to the distributor before apprehending Potter. When Linda St. Clair learns of Dan's suspicions from store owner Fred Davis, she convinces Marty that leaving the area immediately is worth the risk. They are unaware that Dan is maintaining his vigil and that he is prepared to move in quickly at any sign that they are attempting to flee.
