When the Baron is beaten up (but leaving his hands uninjured) Rex and Cal are drawn into a scheme by a couple out of town "talent agents" who force performers in NOLA to sign up and give them 10% of their earnings "or else." They have a local legitimate agency for a front, so the problem for Rex and Cal is to find out who is really the boss behind the muscle while trying to keep anyone else from getting hurt.
