The life of a homeless, mentally retarded shoeshine man named Bleeker is changed after a chance meeting with a glamorous yet sad woman in the park. Because of his cognitive impairment, Bleeker is often the butt of cruel jokes, especially from Solly, an embittered, unemployed musician he encounters nightly at a local jazz bar. Bleeker accepts this abusive attention as kindness until he meets a beautiful woman named Loreli, who is often battered by her violent boyfriend.
