Loosely based on the life of Charlie Parker, the film chronicles the struggles of Richie "Eagle" Stokes (Dick Gregory), a self-destructive jazz saxophone player, with addiction and the decline of his career and follows his friendship with down-and-out college professor David Hillary (Don Murray).
