An underpaid schoolteacher (Charles Dance) gets a new job as the private tutor of a bright, attractive 19-year-old-girl (Amanda Root), the daughter of a very rich couple (Trevor Howard and Claire Bloom). Tensions arise, however, when the "black sheep" of the family, the son, returns home with his pregnant wife.
